I've seen a lot of crazy things at a lot of golf tournaments but I'm not sure if I've ever seen this. A man at the 2014 US Open who was driving NBC's Roger Maltbie around the course got a DWI on Saturday for driving the course under the influence of alcohol.
According to GolfWeek the story was as bizarre as it sounds.
"The officer was upset because, according to him, the driver ran over his foot when leaving the tee area. The cop then chased the cart on a sandy surface just outside the gallery ropes while yelling, 'Stop! Stop!' and 'Come back here.'
The officer finally caught up, climbed onto the back of the cart and put his arms around the driver's neck and shoulders from behind. As Maltbie came over to try to help his friend and colleague, whose name he wouldn't divulge, the patrolman handcuffed the man from behind and arrested him.
'This is a new one,' Maltbie said while walking down the 11th fairway at Pinehurst No. 2. 'I've been to a couple of rodeos and a county fair, and I've never had this happen.'"
The Fayeteville Observer said the man was charged for a number of things.
"Thomas Lineberry, 59, of Wilmington, was charged with assault on a law enforcement officer, hit and run, driving while impaired and resisting, obstructing and delaying a law enforcement officer, according to Pam Walker, a spokeswoman for the North Carolina Department of Public Safety."

The highway patrol has no authority to arrest a man fore “DWI” for driving an off road vehicle on a golf course.
All you guys buying beers from the girls in hot pants on the beer cart are in trouble.
He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harass our people, and eat out their substance.
This is what happens when you run out of dogs to shoot
My “favorite” was a DWI I prosecuted early in my career where a guy was driving on I-95, pulled into the truck Weigh Station, got out of his car and demanded the Trooper weigh him.
Ping.
I presume there were no small children or toddlers around to flash-bang?
Thomas Lineberry must not have seen the squadron of camoed MRAPs or the ninja-suited SWAT teams hidden in the crowd...
Good one!
Have no idea about North Carolina but I believe state troopers in New York State has statewide jurisdiction.
Since NBC has the money to pay Cheslea Clinton $600K to curry favor with her parents, they should have much trouble coming up with a lawyer who can walk this one into the Lee County Courthouse and give everyone including the judge a good laugh. And, while the lawyer is at it, he should ask for a few delays after ensuring the the Highway Patrolman is in court each time. Hopefully, the patrolman lives in Asheville.

HAHA! Sorry about that. ; )
Oopsie!

Cart Driver Charged After Run-in-With Trooper

An Associated Press reporter who witnessed the incident heard Lineberry tell the trooper, "I'm supposed to get the cart to Roger."
"When a state trooper tells you to stop, THAT'S what you're supposed to do," the trooper responded, inches from Lineberry's face.
Some of the other peasants snitched Linesberry out right away, like the good little proles they were trained to be.
Not necessarily.
In some states “operating a vehicle while intoxicated” applies to operation anywhere, on the not unreasonable assumption that it’s hazardous even if you’re not on public land.
As this incident seems to illustrate.
It’s ok, if they think I’m crazy. They are more likely to leave me alone.
Media Golf Cart Driver Arrested For Felony Assault On A Police Officer After Allegedly Running Over Officers Foot

Apparently, there was drama at Pinehurst on Sunday (as a non-golfer any drama would be welcomed in my view). It came in the form of an arrest on the green after North Carolina Highway trooper Ryan Ashley Goodin said that a golf cart run over his foot (witnesses said it was more like an unintentional brush). Goodin ran after golf reporter Roger Maltbies cart driver, Thomas Howerton Lineberry, 59. Lineberry is a volunteer. Goodin reportedly jumped on the cart and put Lineberry into a headlock and then arrested him. He then hit Lineberry with a dubious array of charges, including assaulting a police officer.
Linesberry apparently didn't realize his place in the King's scheme of things, and now it's gonna cost him.
If you see Blue Barrage Balloons and Shiny Badges, and you can't IMMEDIATELY exit stage left, grab your forelock, look down at the ground, and mumble "Yessir, Yer Lordship, sir" as many times as you need to.
