She became a ballet dancer and actress and appeared in “The Phantom of the Opera” (1925) and “Dracula.” For that 1931 classic she spoke the film’s first lines: “Among the rugged peaks that frown down upon the Borgo Pass are found crumbling castles of a bygone age ... . “

What little of her movie career existed, she owed to nepotism. Her uncle was the founder of universal pictures.

i saw Sunset Boulevard at the Orpheum Theatre in San Fran in the late 1990s... Petula Clark of “Downtown,” played the role of Norma Desmond... she was really good... however, i cannot help but think of Carol Burnett’s parody of Norma Desmond whenever the subject arises...
