PERU – A 30-year-old Peru man was shot and killed Saturday night by a rural Miami County homeowner, who told deputies the man was shot in self-defense.
Donny L. Sturgill was found dead in a residence on the 6400 block of North 400 West, near Denver, at around 10 p.m. Saturday after deputies received a call Sturgill had been shot at the house.
Miami County Sheriff Tim Miller said a preliminary investigation revealed there were signs of forced entry into the residence.
He said two people were in the home at the time of the incident. They told deputies one of them got a handgun and shot Sturgill in self-defense.
The preliminary investigation indicates there was some kind of physical altercation between the residents and Sturgill, Miller said.
Deputies are in the process of interviewing witnesses, and crime technicians with the state police are assisting with the collection of evidence at the scene, Miller said.
He said deputies continue to investigate the incident and more details will be released as the investigation progresses.
Sturgill had been arrested by deputies last year for allegedly stabbing a Denver man in the chest and face. He was arrested again in March on charges of domestic battery and criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon.
This is also on the heels of another self-defense shooting in the area this week.
A gal escaped from the mental ward of a local hospital during a court-ordered stay.
She broke into a house and made it to the bedroom where she got ventilated by the homeowner.
I’ll have to look for an update to see if she survived.

Finally someone went out on a limb and said, “But Donnie’s not just clearly dead, he’s really quite sincerely dead.”

Gee, who’d have guessed that he’d commit more crimes? After all he’d only been in trouble twice recently (and apparently released). Besides, he looks like such a sweet kid!

You people don’t even know donny and you definitely don’t know what happened. But you’re quick to judge and say you’re glad he’s dead. Donny had more heart than any of you spineless cowards making your insensitive remarks. It’s funny how the article mentions his past arrests and uses his mugshot for the post.. They couldn’t use a picture of him playing at the beach yesterday with his girlfriend and her kids or a picture of him with his son.. Bc that wouldn’t fit with them portraying him as a monster. So what he got in trouble in the past. Does that mean he deserves to be murdered? The paper makes it sound like he was killed during a home invasion. They don’t mention that they knew each other or that the dude told donny to come to his house. They also don’t mention that donny was trying to leave when the dude shot him. And after he shot him the first time the dude shot him in the head while donny was laying on the ground bleeding.. How is that self defense? What kind of threat could he be posing trying to get out of the house of laying on the ground with a gun shot wound? This wasn’t self defense. It was an execution. But since Donny has tattoos and a troubled past and the kid who shot him comes from a rich family with connections this whole incident will be swept under the rug and portrayed to the public as self defense.
And, just where are you getting your info in an ongoing investigation?
