PARIS Maria Sharapova won her second French Open on Saturday with a 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-4 victory over Simona Halep.
The 6-foot-2 Sharapova and the 5-6 Halep presented a tantalizing matchup of power versus guile, experience versus new blood, and they did not disappoint, giving Roland Garros its first three-set womens final since 2001.
But just as she has all tournament, Sharapova raised her game when she was down.
She was down a break early in the first set but rallied to win it. Halep served for the second set twice but could not close Sharapova out until a tiebreaker. When Sharapova lost her lead in the third set, she mercilessly took it back, winning the last eight points of the match.
Halep, a 22-year-old Romanian, was playing in her first Grand Slam final after rising from No. 57 to No. 4 in the rankings and winning seven WTA titles since last years French Open.

I watched most of it.
I had forgotten how big Sharapova was.
But can she win in Wimbledon’s fast grass courts?
The courts in French Open are slower.
I clicked on this thread to only read the comments. Wasn’t expecting all these photos.
Wowee Zowee again! 6’2”? Me like! Just what the Doctor prescribed!
Hard to forget how big Halep was before the breast reduction surgery!
By the grace of the tennis gods, Serenaroid was out and gave Maria a chance at the championship. I don’t care for Maria’s on court drama but I will say, she played to win today.
I’m still trying to figure out the purpose in the design of that blouse Halep was wearing — it looked so strange and distracting.
Wonder if she likes “slightly older guys?”
I’m not sure exactly how it works, but I’d guess Addidas, who gives her lots of bucks, probably gets a say in her attire.
Maybe the design is to help rein in her chest, which is still ample after a lot of reduction.
HOORAY Maria! Congrats to all of the women, ladies and girls who compete.
Surprised she didn't throw her back out serving the ball...
Lots of pressure on the lower back from all that "ahem" weight
Cliked for the pics!
She has won Wimbleton before. That was in 2004 when she was only 17. She defeated Serena Williams.I remember that. Having given Serena a well deserved beating is almost enough to overlook all of Maria Shriekapova's incessant on-court screaming.
Simona Halep, who lost, had breast REDUCTION surgery a while back.As an avid tennis player, I am very sympathetic to Halep's decision to undergo the surgery. Not only was she handicapped with a lot of extra weight, her super-sized breasts interfered with her arm movement and stroke production. She used to receive a lot of not-so-nice comments on the tennis forums. A lot of people saw her as enormous breasts with a tennis talent attached instead of as an enormous tennis talent that happened to come with breasts attached.
