Well, the difference between Cates and Shields is that while Shields has a beautiful face (and I love natural thick eyebrows on women, short of a unibrow, and loathe the pencil-thin horror), her body is more boyish and tall and flat chested (I believe the contrast between her and the body double they used in “Lagoon” was ridiculous). Phoebe, while petite, is clearly more voluptuous in “Paradise.” The one thing that always bugged me for the longest time is when she cut her hair. Long hair (like she had in “Fast Times...”) and she was a stunner. The boy cut was a visceral turnoff.

Both had expiration date on their looks but Shields was much earlier than Cates was. I think Shields was a pretty kid but as she grew into her teen years she became more and more funny looking. Cates still looked good in early adult hood.
