If I were Obama, I would announce that Susan Rice will be available on all 5 Sunday talk shows to finally answer all your questions about Fast & Furious, IRS targeting, the VA affair and Obamacare.
They wanted to release those Gitmo prisoners.
They wanted it to look legit.
They wanted to make sure the person they were trading for was a “good” person, in their definition (ie, anti-American),
so they traded 1 turncoat for 5 Taliban leaders.

Totally agree. For the WH, the sole goal was springing the Gitmo 5, not rescuing an American soldier (traitor or otherwise.) Bergdahl was simply currency to give the appearance of a deal.
I think, for PR purposes, the WH would have preferred the sham deal be sealed with a real American hero. Certainly, it would give their media sycophants and apologists an easier time of it, too. But the US has no other soldiers in the hands of Islamists, darnitall, so a deserter would have to do.
The Gitmo 5 were outright gifts to our sworn enemies.
Funny ...The heads of state from nations that don't want to kill us get gifts like iPods loaded with the Greatest Hits of Barack Obama, or seeds from Lady O's garden-that-other-people-tend. Those who want to annhilate us get 5 top-ranking officers to help them do just that. Priceless.
