The disastrous smoking habits of the Irish have been highlighted in two new studies—we are far more prone than other Europeans to continue smoking after suffering a stroke and one in 10 of us cut back on food to fund our craving. […]

Just what lengths smokers will go to to feed their habit is borne out in a separate study by Pfizer Ireland, which found:

More than half of the smokers interviewed admitted to spending between €50 and €100 per week on cigarettes. …

Clearly, they’re not addicted to carbs.

I’m so grateful to God that my wife and I quit smoking about 4 years ago. I don’t see how anyone can afford to smoke anymore.

Congrats! I still find it a bit much to believe that they are spending 50-100 euros a week......a month I could believe, but that is equivalent to 67-137 dollars a week.

I was very proud and happy after my father finally quit smoking. Over 40 years smoking more than a pack a day. I can only guess how much money was pissed away. And yes, we’re Irish. He’s 70 now and in fairly good health.

Maybe not. Carbs are generally the cheapest foods. Cutting your food budget generally means more carbs and less meat and fresh fruit and veggies.

Surely now, the lot of us were believin’ that the chiefest addiction amongst the Irish was that good Jameson whisky. And they’re givin’ THAT up for cigarettes? What’s the world comin’ to now, I ask you?

Why not grow your own?

Cold climate? Greenhouse. Many strains to choose from and I have grown it here (MN) in the far northern tundra. If millions processed their own ‘baccy just a few decades back, why can’t today’s smokers?

FYI, I do not smoke but I support liberty.

A pack now averages well over $5. Two packs a day is $70 a week. There are people who smoke 3 and 4 packs a day. And some states they cost 6 to 12 bucks a pack. Like I said, I don’t see how people can afford to smoke.

Keep it up, you probably still occasionally have an intense few seconds of wanting to relapse wash over you, but that will continue fading away, and in time totally disappear.

Don’t know how that will work in Ireland, who doesn’t even grow as much sugar beet as it used to because of the stupid “Common Agricultural Policy” of the EU and its quota system. Ireland is generally cool and wet, but not typically cold.

Neither my wife or I have ever wanted a cigarette for one second since we quit.

That is very unusual, were you light smokers?

My wife smoked a pack a day but she didn’t smoke the individual cigarettes all the way to the filter like I did. And I smoked 2 packs a day. We believe God had a lot to do with taking the craving.

I have a long time girlfriend that used to smoke Virginia Slims, she was the most refined smoker I ever saw, she would elegantly take a puff and set the cigarette down, and then do that 2 or 3 more times and then stub out what was almost a whole cigarette, I was a 3 pack a day ashes everywhere, smoke to the nub kind of guy, and was fascinated watching her and her smoking, it reminded me of the way my elegant ex-wife ate, and how I never saw her not leave a small portion of everything on the plate, when finished.
