I think it comes back to the existential doubt, Is God really on my side? What is He like? Can I get on His team? And then you throw in your poetry, and it gets complicated.

There are also some interesting parallels to CS Lewis’ Space Trilogy.
Lewis’ eldili have obviously parallels to the Valar/Maiar, including some of them turning to darkness and evil.
I think he was definitely an elf who was ‘high’, though not necessarily a high elf.
