First it was the cronut -- part croissant, part doughnut -- that had New Yorkers waiting around the block. Then the Chocolate Chip Cookie Shot Glass had sweet tooths calling.
The new baking rage mashup? A donnoli.
Imagine the sweet ricotta filling you'd find inside in a cannoli, piped into a fried doughnut and covered in powdered sugar. That sentence just sounds delicious. Smithsonian Magazine named it one of five pastries to eclipse the cronut .
Thrillist.com reported April 30 that Philadelphia, Pa., bakers Frangelli's Bakery and Di Bruno Brothers fuel the donnoli trend.
But it turns out there's no need to make the trip to Philly. The donoli is flourishing in Greenwich Township. It's missing an extra "n," but it's there. The New Jersey version comes with a dose of extra chocolate. And its own Twitter feed .
Santina Stankevich, spokeswoman for ShopRite, says the chain's Belleville, Essex County, store started selling donolis in March .
"Customers started going crazy for them," Stankevich says.
Since its launch, most of the other independently owned and operated ShopRite stores -- including the one in Greenwich -- have started carrying them, as well, she says.
The 99 cent doughnut is freshly fried, stuffed with a mix of cannoli cream and whipped cream, and covered in chocolate frosting.
"Oh my gosh, they're so good. I could eat them all day long," Stankevich says.
Are they the originals? Hard to say. I tried a version in 2013 when I was on my hunt for cronuts. A story on zagat.com pointed out Philly's cronut copycats and sent me to Potito's Bakery's for a ricotta-chocolate chip stuffed doughnut. Cronut or donnoli? Apparently, it was ahead of its time.
I called over to Easton Baking Co. after I spoke with ShopRite to see if the donnoli trend made its way across the river. If anyone in the Lehigh Valley would be making them, it would be the Mosellie family, already known for stuffing special occasion cakes with their cannoli cream.
Sadly, no donoli or donnoli in Easton.
Could they make them in the future? Maybe. Co-owner Patty Mosellie says it doesn't sound like much of a challenge.
"Honestly, it would be no big deal," Mosellie says.

Whoa.....
If that was a life-size swimming pool, I’m doing a cannonball into it...
Now wrap it in bacon, and it’s perfect...
It’s actually more of a Boston Cream, with ricotta replacing the regular custard filling.
“Leave the gun, take the donnolis”
I would not want to be standing between Chris Christie and the donnoli.
I heard Oklahoma is actually investigating that as a humane method of execution.
Haha!!!
Great movie...
Yum.
Looks good.
Good grief, I gained 10 pounds just reading this. I nominate you as FR’s food editor.
Greenwich, CT has a Shop Rite?
Great, now we’ll have the healthy Michelle Obama visit the state..
Servants have to shop somewhere.
