Yes they do fly in at nuts elevations when on a drop. Mostly they surprise you so you don’t have time to get a camera ready.
When i was a kid there was a B17 firebomber in my area. I always loved seeing that one.

An old article but with lots of pictures. I don’t know if they still house them at SCLA or not, but this was their home at one time.
It’s the end of that run, the retardant flow is cut off, the plane noses up which slows it down a bit, and the already-dispensed retardant keeps going forward.
I call real. I saw a report on the news last night and it showed one of those dropping a load of retardant. The jet came in EXTREMELY low, maybe a hundred feet off the deck. So based on that, I find no reason to doubt the authenticity of that picture.

I could see the plume of smoke from my house when the one in your picture crashed in Walker, CA. There is a wildland firefighters memorial near the site now.
Anything’s possible, but if it’s a fake, it’s masterful. (I’m a Photoshop artist). What a typical “forger” would overlook is the shadow of the plane on the cloud. Also, ALL of the lighting and shadows are coherent. That’s extremely difficult to do when compositing two separate images from two different sources.

That crash was about 40 miles from where I am sitting. The plane was often cycling out of the nearby airport. They dumped the load to fast and literally folded the wings off the plane. BTW it was a plane with a checker past. There were no maintenance records for years while the CIA operated it.

Thanks for the analysis. It looked fake to me because the top of the pic looked textured. Early in the thread, I found a better quality file of the same shot and can see that it is real.

I am surprised that there are people on the streets. In Arizona it would be mandatory evacuation if the fire and slurry bombers were that close.
