I recall it very well since I had not left for Texas. I saw it live on channel 11 in Pittsburgh. The other stations, when they did the replays, edited out the shot but channel 11 kept it in, showing the whole thing. I think there was one station over in Philly that showed the whole thing. It’s on Youtube.

I saw it on YouTube and I was flabbergasted.

It didn’t seem real. It was like something out of a movie.

I believe Channel 11 only showed the actual shooting in an early broadcast. By the evening news the footage was edited so the suicide wasn’t shown.

I was in Harrisburg at the time. WGAL showed the entire event.

There was a strategy in play. This happened on Super Bowl Sunday(da Bears). Dwyer had just been convicted in court of some malfeasance. He had not been sentenced but I believe that was to happen the following day. Once sentenced, his state pension and other benefits would be lost to him and his family.

Bud shot himself that Sunday so that he could not be sentenced. The state went after his pension anyway and the courts have ruled that since he was never sentenced that the family could still receive his pension and other benefits.
