I have no desire to embarrass you but your posting of two short barreled 7.62X51 G3s then of a couple of MP-5s or HK-94s is just that.
Why don’t we just agree that we disagree about the .22LR?
I have a Henry. Any small game within two hundred yards (up to coyotes and coons) is food on the table. Beyond that range I cannot see well enough to make the shot, even with a 9x12x40. Something like a head in a blue helmet could get one In the eye socket at that range. There are nice soft point rounds at 40 grains running over 1800 ft/sec. After collapse of law, a liter soda bottle will actually muffle a shot enough to make locating the shooter very difficult at 100 + yards ... for survival skills, of course. The AR sends a 55 grain projectile at around 3000 ft/sec and tumbles nicely.
I got my son one of those Henry’s. Slick gun. I don’t know why people discount the venerable .22 LR. I know I sure wouldn’t want to get shot with one.
I consider a .22 to be a “must have”. For novice shooters it should be the only thing on the menu. You can learn the fundamentals of sight picture, breathing, and trigger pull without having to worry about recoil. And despite the recent shortages ammo is comparatively cheap so you can practice more.
I take one of my .22s to the range every time I go no matter what other stuff I’m bringing. As far as lethality goes, well, it’ll do the job more times than not if you place your shots correctly.
I have never fired one of the Henry rifles but have seen them in the racks at Wal-Mart. They look very much like the old Erma-Werke lever actions made in Germany.
If they are indeed the same design, that is not a criticism of the Henrys as they were a really slick action. I will say the Henry brand appear to be a little better finished.
The Henry rifle is as smooth as butter in 22lr and magnum. Have not shot anything of theirs in larger caliber.
It's how the world lived until the advent of Capitalism and the Industrial Revolution. Most Progs would like to see us living that way again.
I don’t want any one to die, thinking a .22 LR will protect them.
Yes . . . and no.
All other things being equal, I'd recommend that a healthy man age 21-55 in a gun-friendly state own real weapons: a 9 mm or .45 handgun, a 12 gauge shotgun, and a 30-06, 30-30, or .308 rifle, along with the .22LR rifle and/or handgun, and depend on the centerfire rifle for long-range defense and big game, the shotgun for home defense and waterfowl, and the pistol for carry. The .22 would be my last choice for self-defense. All other things are not necessarily equal. I have close friends who depend on Krav and other unarmed techniques because of local laws. I have relatives, including my father, who no longer shoot anything bigger than .22lr because of health constraints. There are a whole lot of adequate reasons for compromising on a .22lr, and planning to empty all 8/9/10/12/whatever chambers or a 25 round magazine if needed to stop a threat, given internal or external limitations.
Perhaps only half the magazine in self-defense. Still, for the price of the BATFE tax stamp, you could get something at least as effective that doesn’t require fingerprints, a lawyer, or a year-long wait.
“If I only had 1 survival rifle, what would it be?”
The answer depends on what am I trying to survive? Lost in the backwoods for a week? Long term SHTF societal collapse with lots of hostiles running around? Bugging out? Bugging in? Weather disaster?
Long term shtf- Ar15 or AK
Lost- scoped 22 pistol or 10/22
Taurus Tracker 992 Revolver .22LR/Magnum
Taurus Tracker 992 Revolver .22LR/Magnum
Not bad, but lose the scope.
Look, I love a .22LR. But that thing is ridiculous.
As far as one gun. .22? Nope.
AR-15 in .223.
Really, probably 12 ga. pump. 6 shot, buckshot and slugs.
But in a shtf situation, I'm going with the AR.
Would you really want to be by yourself in the wilds of Alaska or the wilds of Detroit with a .22? I'm thinking not. But it's your call.
My next purchase. One of the benefits of my job is that I’m a factory certified armorer for that particular weapon. So I could do all my own work.
