The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.
No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

We live in an unincorporated part of the county, have nearly 2 acres and are zoned ag/res - so we can have just about anything we want - including a road side stand.
Two years ago, I planted some of my leftover tomato plants in flower beds around the yard. It was quite a sight having them together.
The pond is really getting there.
Sounds like you have the plan to make it happen.
We have marginal sunny hours in our tiny garden. There’s just too many large trees in the yard.
If I had a choice between buying plants and buying groceries I would buy plants every time. Working in the garden I am hot, covered in dirt, and so tired I can barely move but darn it I love it.
Finally due to get some rain this weekend in the upstate of SC.. been almost 20 degrees over our normal highs here this week, into the low 90s!
Does anyone know anything about growing asparagus? We planted some but feel pretty unsure about our skills

That’s my wife. Every payday she loads her car up with more plants.
What I'm looking for right now is a good tasting tomato to buy at the grocery store, but I don't know the names of tomatoes or which ones are the sweetest to eat at this time. What about Roma tomatoes..are they tasty, with some good flavor?
I use to have a plot at a community garden; last year was the first time at the house; garden only gets sun from 1:30 to 5
Other than Romas, all we have in the store is Tomatos, or vine ripened tomatos.
Try the romas, they often taste better than the others. They have more solids and are used for canning a lot.
I think we only get about 4 1/2 to 5 hrs, depending on just what part of the season.
Nice looking pond project. I cleaned my pond out a couple of years ago. There were a couple of sink holes that acted like quicksand when I stepped near them. The next Spring I expected to find no fish.....but sure as shootin’... bluegills, pickerel and largemouth bass ( full sized ) returned. They must have been down in the sink hole muck. Oddly, bullheads also appeared though I had never seen them before. They must have come in via the blue heron that visits periodically or the small stream that feeds the pond.
I’ll have lettuce and peas in the ground by the end of the weekend here in southern NH.
I hate to say it but I don’t think I have ever bought a tomato at the store that tasted as good as a home grown.
We grow all our tomatoes in pots. We buy approx. 10-15 plants and grow all kinds of varieties of tomatoes. We have dogs and when we tried plants in beds, the dogs were eating all our tomatoes so we plant those in pots and keep them up on our deck!
Tree trimmers are clearing trees out of the power lines on the street, and I got them to dump the chipped wood in my front yard.
Also made arrangements for them to dump more later when they need a place to dump.

Two big questions .......
Love eggplant & get hit with flea beetles every time I grow them. I’ve looked up various “solutions” online .... treating the soil (in a new bed this year), insecticidal soap, planting other plants they love nearby (radishes, for instance) .... anybody got something that works for them?
Also, anybody got a homemade insecticidal soap/veggie spray recipe - looked up a bunch online, but would rather hear from somebody I “know” what works for them.
Big week - the garden went in ... tomatoes, eggplants, peppers, plus the two Trombetta seedlings went outside. Planted seeds in the garden for two lettuce mixes, spinach, radishes, onions, chives, and herbs (basil, thyme) & transplanted the volunteer cilantro plants out of the garden to their own pots. I have some Chinese Kale (Broccoli) that is about two inches - took a taste test & it does taste like broccoli - will have to try it earlier in the fall this year. Held off on carrots - will do them in the fall as well. The garden looks the best it’s probably going to look - no weeds, everything neat and green. It’s all good .... for now. :-)
I don’t have enough room to start tomato plants from seeds so I have to buy them from a local store with a garden center. The brand they mostly have is “Bonnie” and Bonnie has a great website, including all the vegetables they sell. Some of the tomatoes they list are proprietary types like ‘Bonnie Original’, but they also have other tomatoes of the type you might see in stores or at a farmer’s market. I’ve resigned myself to the fact that bullheads are inevitable.
The neighbor built a pond above mine and there were bullheads mixed in with the channel cats that he bought.
When we get a lot of rain his dam overflows and the bullheads swim out.
I’ve picked up 30 or more of them from my yard over the past couple years.
Picked the first tick of the season off of my arm yesterday...supposedly a record crop headed to Red Hampshire this year...some doctors here put lyme disease in the same category as chemtrails, so not sure whether to panic or not. :-)
