In 1980 there was a post mortality study of pancreatic cancer deaths that showed nearly 90% of the victims drank coffee, which USA Today headlined with a huge story about the cancer risks of coffee. Once controlled for diet and alcohol intake [which was the actual cause] this "breathtaking correlation" disappeared.

Seeing an effect and noting a common point of intersection with a pre-event cause has a name: Superstition. Superstition isn't science, and government funding doesn't make it so.
