The dog “approached” him in this account. The original news release said it, “attacked,” him. I know because I saw the news clip which had some five year olds playing with the big, scary dog in the background...

My agency had a guy shoot himself in the leg putting a gun back in a holster. He still doesn't know how it happened. Shouldn't be possible because our policy is to have our thumb covering the hammer as the weapons is put back in the holster. If you hit an obstruction with the trigger you would feel resistance from the thumb holding the hammer down.
Shooting yourself while drawing a gun probably means this deputy has had bad habits for a while and his firearms instructors haven't been watching when he is at the range.

Evidently a dog is not threat, but an armed Deputy is.

Exactly!!!
A big, vicious attack dog would LOVE the smell of fresh Deputy blood, wouldn’t it?

“Shooting yourself while drawing a gun probably means this deputy has had bad habits for a while and his firearms instructors haven’t been watching when he is at the range.”
After applying Occam’s Razor the following materialized: “Shooting yourself while drawing a gun probably means you can’t fix stupid.
Stupid IS forever.

"Dwayne, how did this happen?"
"Well, Chief, I was minding my own business, thinking about all the times I screwed up. I said to myself, Dwayne, you sure are a dumbass. Why, you're such a dumbass, you'll probably get yourself killed one of these days."
"Then what happened, Dwayne?"
"Well, Chief, at that point, I was in fear of my life -- so I shot myself."
To: GladesGuru
There are people that you take to the range and work on muscle memory for 6 weeks and they keep those good habits for a lifetime. There are others that dump all those good habits right away. The first group don’t shoot themselves or others accidentally.
