PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Once again, Portland officials are preparing to flush millions of gallons of treated water because a young person urinated into a city reservoir.

Water Bureau Administrator David Shaff said 38 million gallons will be discarded because a 19-year-old was caught in the act on Wednesday

You would think that Portland would have some sort of treatment plant operation before it went directly into the glass form the water faucet... Maybe they should do a quick internet search to find out what they do..

Treatment & Testing Portland’s Water

The Portland Water Bureau treats Portland’s water with chloramination. This process starts with chlorine to disinfect the water. Next the city adds ammonia to ensure that disinfection remains adequate throughout our distribution system.

The Portland Water Bureau also adds sodium hydroxide to increase the pH of the water to reduce corrosion of plumbing systems. This treatment helps control lead and copper levels at customers’ taps should these metals be present in the customers’ home plumbing.

Portland’s water is currently not filtered. The Bull Run source meets the filtration avoidance criteria of the 1989 Surface Water Treatment Rule and has had a waiver from the requirement to filter since 1991.

I thoroughly enjoyed my last stay in Portland and all of Oregon. Drove through the Columbia Gorge, stayed in Brightwood along the Sandy River. You have a great state.

Still it is a really silly move to keep treated water in an open lake.

According to the article they have five open reserviors for holding the treated water. They
are in the process of building underground/closed storage to comply with the Federal Regs.
