Looking for a good book recommendation on WWI

After listening to one of my favorite podcaster, Dan Carlin & his Hardcore History, about the beginning of World War I, I would love to find out more about this time in history.

I know that Freepers are a well read bunch and I am asking for any recommendations you may care to make in a good book covering this time in history.

I realize it’s not a book, but...

I’ve watched much of these. The photos are mostly very good.

Looks like a good book - I like those that talk about the effects of events on average people as well as theory and such!! Thank you.

The First World War by John Keegan

The Real War 1914-1918 by B. H. Liddell Hart

Above would be my recommendations for a single-volume approach to the entire war. I'm just finishing a very interesting book on the events preceding the war and the diplomatic breakdown:

The Sleepwalkers: How Europe Went To War In 1914 by Christopher Clark

- not, probably, what you're looking for but there's a lot of information in it I haven't found anywhere else.

Good luck!

YW. I thought it far superior in explaining the causes and the evolution of the war. It dealt with the land war primarily while “Castles of Steel” was a fascinating view from the naval perspective.

Just checked the library here in Charleville and requested it. They have it, or can get it from the Brisbane library. Again, many thanks. Janey

I read “A Naval History of WWI” by Paul G. Halpern a few months ago. Comprehensive and lots of navy speak detail. It’s amazing how much WWI naval action took place around the globe that you may have never heard of.

Any of several excellent books by the British historian Lyn MacDonald are well worth the effort to track down.

They Called It Passchendaele
The Roses of No Man's Land
Somme
1914: The Days of Hope
1914-1918: Voices and Images of the Great War
1915: The Death of Innocence
To the Last Man: Spring 1918

Adam Hochschild's "To End All Wars" covers the war on the European home fronts and tells many stories the battlefield histories have ignored.
