“On top of all that you have to have a magnifying glass to see anything on the screen!”
Or a screen magnifier app :)
My husband said his is good for everything except being a phone. Of course, he is an old curmudgeon, too.
No, you don't. They told me the same thing when I bought my S3. But what they mean is you need a google account. And you can certainly have that without gmail, which is just Google's email service.
Go by one of your mobile carrier’s stores and ask them to show you the basics. If that doesn’t work, and you are close to Issaquah, my younger son has the same phone and would be happy to show you how to use it.
I was wondering about that while I was responding. Just assumed it was a whole package deal. If someone is going through the time to setup a Google account, they might as well setup a gmail account too while they're at it, but didn't intend to misinform.
LOLOLOL! You are not alone. My husband refused to accept a “smart” phone and sticks with the last available model of flip phone. I bought a “smart” phone, and I hate it. I receive calls on my husband’s flip phone because my smart phone loses battery life too fast if I leave it on. Sorry.
Same here. Our old cell phone started acting hinkey after 10 years and we went back to Sprint to get another one. There were only two keypad phones available - the rest being smartphones, which I don't need. Our old keypad-types had a provision for a flash card - the new one doesn't. I have to email it to myself for an extra charge.
I don't need/want all that other crap - I use the phone mainly to ask the wife "Where you at?" at the supermarkets or stores, and rack up maybe one hour a month. Like you, when this one dies, I'll have to get a hand-held entertainment center that can make a phone call.
That ! lol
What other frustrated curmudgeon do with their cell phones.....

takes a lickin', still tickin' !
Nearly 2 years ago I made the jump from dumb phone to smart phone. I played with a lot of models down at Best Buy before settling for the Apple iPhone. It seemed a little bit simpler than the Android phones, but in retrospect, any of them requires a steep learning curve. It may take a few weeks to get comfortable with the basics, even with help. Practice repetition doing one task, then move on to learn another. Samsung wasn’t a bad choice, you just have to ease into it. Once I adapted, I couldn’t live without it - the world of information is at my fingertips. The smartphone is one of the greatest gizmos to come out in several generations.
Thank you for the info. Even if we can have cameras, I don’t want anything too complex. I want a damn telephone, not tiny computer to ruin my poor eyes. We have an iPad, that is enough technology.
That's one of the weird and frustrating parts. We got two phones and when my wife goes to 'settings' she gets a long list of choices, I get 7.
That's why I am looking for a step by step tutorial that talks about function and not just making movies or playing music for three friends at once.
...this getting old is getting old!
What are you looking to do exactly? lol
The second thing I wanted to do was update my calendar and put the notification notices a couple days ahead as I always do. That has been a failure on several levels; getting an alarm sound I can hear, verifying the notification and making it work. I have a reminder function that let's me choose how far in advance and a notification tab that does absolutely nothing. There's no tab for save and no tab for edit, that I can find and the only things that come up in the help tab are about making movies and playing music for friends.
Obviously, I'm frustrated and trying to figure this stuff out before my return date. This is much like the WIndows8 software in my wife's new laptop that doesn't even come close to doing what I have learned to do in Vista Win7.
I still have a flip-phone. Everyone kids me about it...
Heck, I don't even want a cell-phone. But my kids demand it.
I will change when I'm forced to...I guess.
