Finally!
I was without a computer all week last week and then found out frday that the old computer was beyond repair. I got this one for a good price and it seems a much better computer; videos play well for one thing. Right now there are only two problems:
1)Although I set up my two e-mail accounts on Outlook Express correctly and exactly as I'm supposed to, one of them refuses to work (fortunately, not my main one). The other one resolutely refuses to do so even though there is absolutely no logical reason for this. Also, this is after two phone calls and two remote control sessions. One of them got the bad account to work once, then it stopped again. However, the main account is still working and even if it weren't I could still access my e-mail on the 'Net (which is what I'll have to do for the other one). All in all, this is not a big deal.
2)HOWEVER--this one is (to me at least). For some inexplicable reason the fonts of all the web pages I view look splotched and faded, much as would a newspaper or magazine printed with ink in the process of drying out. While I expect I can get used to it with time, this is a biiiiig pain-in-the-tail for me. Does anyone out there know how to darken and solidify the fonts one views on the 'Net? I'd really appreciate the help. Thanks!

I just did a search for "clear type." I don't have it.
The thing is, with my old computer, I didn't need it. I don't understand why this one is so different.

If not a driver issue, sounds like resolution/refresh rate problem.
This is from win7x64, but imagine 8 is similar:

For ClearType, go to: Start / Run / copy-paste this > cttune.exe

Outlook Express is legacy and does not use the proper protocol standards in place Exactly..
Download Thunderbird from Mozilla (its free) and try again. I bet you have better luck.
I also concur. I have been using it for - well, years. However, if you have something personal against Thunderbirds, there are other email programs out there that are better than Outhouselook DistressExpress.. Actually, ANYTHING (almost) is better than OE.. ;-)

I want to thank everyone for all the advice they've given. I downloaded a "Clear Type" program from Microsoft (I didn't have one on my computer) and it looks better now. Not what I remember from my old computer, but definitely better than before and something I can get used to eventually.
Again, thank you all.

1.) Download and install Thunderbird from Mozilla. It looks and plays like Outlook Express. It is much more robust and forgiving. Chuck Outlook Express.
2.) Find out what kind of video card you have (or if it is onboard the MB) and then download and install the latest drivers for it.

Having setup my own person email server with Postfix and Dovecot, I can personally attest to the horrific programming Microsoft tries to pass off for Outlook. It may work well in an Exchange environment, but as an IMAP client, forget about it. I’d rather log into a terminal and read my mail with Mutt!

I'm using Thunderbird now. The wonky e-mail account still isn't working (for absolutely no reason whatsoever), but I'm not going to worry about it anymore. My main one works, and the other can be checked at the e-mail web page.
I've downloaded clear type (?) and am using it now. It still doesn't look exactly like the old computer, but it's readable and I'll get used to it.
Thank you for your help.
