Chick-fil-A has surpassed KFC as the top chicken fast food chain.
Chick-fil-A's sales in 2013 passed $5 billion, compared with KFC's $4.2 billion, reports Venessa Wong at Bloomberg Businessweek.
Chick-fil-A has 1,775 U.S. stores, while KFC has 4,491. Despite a smaller footprint, Chick-fil-A's average sales are more than triple those of its larger competitor, Wong writes.
And Chick-fil-A achieves these results despite being closed on Sundays for religious reasons.
Wong illustrates a couple of reasons for Chick-fil-A's success.

“Popeyes is better...”
Have you been to $1.29 Tuesdays? Like every thug from the hood came out and lined up...
Every thread needs one. Thanks for being that guy.
Agreed, Chick Fil A tastes homemade :-)
They also have good diet lemonade.
Going to get a chicken sandwich is now an act of political rebellion when you hit Chick-Fil-A instead of KFC.
That’s just stupid. You can wipe every ounce of the taste of Popeye’s off with a napkin and get left with inedibly dry, tasteless meat.
Besides, I’d avoid Popeye’s on principle. Their principle marketing for years was to spread outrageous rumors about KFC among black people and then subtly market FUBU tactics.
Such rumors included “They quit calling themselves Kentucky Fried Chicken because they use organisms so genetically modified that the government won’t let them call it chicken,” “So-and-so ate spider’s eggs in KFC, and millions of spiders exploded from her gums,” yadda yadda yadda.
I have to fend for dinner myself tonight before a meeting I have to host so after all this talk I’ll be headed to the local CFA as well.
Actually having chicken helps. Half the time I go to KFC they’re out.
In our town, Logansport Indiana, KFC and Long John Silvers share the same building...you can order either when you go to the counter or the drive through!!!
You are correct that they don’t offer the fried chicken dinner of breast, legs,
thighs, wings, etc. However they do have strips or nuggets. Those are my
two favorites there. I
basically don’t frequent the other chicken places except maybe Popeyes for which
I’m after shrimp. IMO CFA is a bit pricey but the food is good.
CFA uses only breast meat where you can get the wings,
thighs, legs, and assorted parts, etc at the others.
That's my experience too...
Ordered some wings and a drink at the KFC drive-thru and was given a wrong receipt. I told the woman and she said, "You're saving money"... and I told her I didn't want to 'save money, I wanted a receipt for what I had bought. She was not a happy camper ...
Then I thought 'do I really want to eat food made by people who steal'? I mean how ethical are they going to be with how they handle the food? Anyhow, it was my last time at KFC.
Something similar happened at McDonalds a few times several years back - and I quit buying stuff for the grandkids there.
I remember when these places use to hire high school and college kids who were honest and wanting to do well at their first jobs. It sure isn't that way anymore... CFA still has the 'clean/honest feel... hope they keep it...
bought kfc last month. took it back to work. two bites and i threw it out. actually made me sick.
Shows how expensive Chick-Fil-A is.
The KFC’s around here (East TN) are not open for breakfast...CFA is.
I like KFC but the msg that is in the spices for the chicken give me headaches.
That’s sort of the thing, that’s why I don’t go to Popeye’s that often also, I don’t want to stereotype (and don’t fault me for saying that, in the end, a broad cross-section of people like Fried Chicken) but I think it’s true and someone mentioned, the Chick Fil A drive up had 20 cars waiting, the Wendy’s had 2.... well, in some parts of town, Fried Chicken will tend to be more popular... just the way, Pizza is probably more popular with certain groups, college students for example.
But I enjoy the “Lousiana inspired cuisine” at Popeye’s too.
As I said Red Beans and Rice. You’re not living unless you have Red Beans and Rice.... well, maybe I wouldn’t go that far.
I read Dave Thomas’s bio, Dave Thomas out of Ohio, worked for Kentucky Fried Chicken, it inspired him to start up Wendy’s. KFC probably was special back in the day and may have lost that some. I’ve still had enjoyable meals there.
The last time I went to KFC it was due to being starved on a day of errands. I hated it. The meal was lousy. Certainly not like it was 20 years ago when we’d get a bucket/dinner regularly for a convenient meal. They’d been going downhill for years, but that was the worst.
Popeye’s became my favorite (spicy) years ago, but it’s quite a drive (only when I’m on a trip). But the last time I got Popeye’s it wasn’t the same. They changed the oil or something. Tasted no different than Albertson’s fried chicken (which is great for a picnic) and the potatoes were waxy. Who knows. One more time is strike 3 (wasn’t the first time).
I miss Chick-Fil-A. They haven’t been here in years for some reason. Last time I had their food was in 1986; I’m betting they wouldn’t disappoint if I had it next week (way optimistic...will have to wait til I do some traveling & know where they have a restaurant).
Yep, and another thing — they are lightning fast.
Three cheers for CFA for thriving through sheer excellence.
