A man cut his own hand off with a homemade guillotine after enduring years of excruciating nerve pain.
Mark Goddard built the contraption using an axe, some springs and an old gate post. The 44-year-old claimed he resorted to such drastic action because hospital staff had refused to treat the pains he suffered for over 16 years following a motorcycle crash.
I should not have to go to such extremes to get my pain stopped. There was an alternative and that was having it done properly in hospital, he explained.
Unfortunately for the man from Newton Abbot in Devon, the homemade device only partially severed his wrist and he had to finish off the job with a knife.
He then threw the hand onto a bonfire in his garden so that surgeons could not sew it back on.
There should never have been any need for me to do this. It would have spared so much distress all round but it was the only way. At least it will give me and my family our lives back, he added.
Mr Goddards pains still continue and he has threatened the NHS with a deadline for treatment otherwise he will chop his arm off at the elbow.
After being rushed to hospital, it was estimated that the former mechanic lost two pints of blood.
Mr Goddard was anxious to stress that he had undergone several psychiatric examinations since his difficulties started and had always been given a clean bill of health.

He’s a handy fellow.
Much better construction. Say what you will against New Englanders, they take pride in their craftsmanship.
“He’s as normal as that Abby guy.”
Abby Normal?
:-)
(Obscure movie reference.)
Well now he’s a single handy fellow.
I’m outta jokes, could someone give me a hand?
There is a particular kind of mental illness that makes people want to discard a limb, no matter how painful the amputation is. There are some physicians willing to do the amputation, as long as they are paid. And then, there are those who want their genitals mutilated.
It is indicative of how far medical science has to go, that we do not know how to cure these people without mutilation.
Did she use something like one of these?
Allegedly, it will do 400 sheets of 20-pound paper at a whack. Dunno how many sheets equal an arm.
On the downside, it "comes with multiple safety features".
Sort of make a basket out of your arms, I think...
“they could have given him non-drug, laser therapy for the pain. still could. it works for this kind of pain.”
Could u be more specific on this or direct me to some info as my wife has chronic tennis elbow and we are always looking for a solution to her pain?
Thanks
Mel
I get pain in my toe which was removed several years ago.
“Give that man a hand!”
“Stand up Joe!”
Nerve pain, nerve damage due to the accident.
Solution: burn out the nerve.
Seen it done.
There’s the old country song “I Gave Her A Hand, She Gave Me The Finger.”
If we can’t cure them, for G-d’s sake we can at least medicate them.
I might just pay Houston a visit. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome pain is indeed very painful and temporarily debilitating.
Sometimes impossible to hold a glass of water, or sleep.
Got it in both hands, both arms and both shoulders/collar bone areas. Makes sleep almost impossible most nights unless I have a strong painkiller.
Can’t even thrown a snowball more than 50 feet. Used to be able to throw it 100 feet or more and very accurately.
Glad I don’t live in England. They would have given me A kidney pie and two aspirins to cure it, and told me to come back in two years.
I really feel sorry for this man. My mother was a chronic pain patient for at least the last 10 years of her life. Only the Leukemia pain was worse, but at least it didn’t last too long.
Pain is real. It is just that some doctors refuse to listen to the patient. I’ve had two great doctors in my family, so I know how a good doctor functions. They “listen”.
I tried to make a pillow of my lap, but he sicced his reindeer on me.
Not on the Queen’s shilling, apparently.
Golf clap?
Golf clap.
[patpatpatpatpatpatpatpatpatpatpat...]
