Time for a new laptop. The Sony Vaio is getting tired. Am looking for a reasonably priced laptop with some power to it. It is a desktop replacement so it cannot be one of those sissy teenyweenies.
Currently have a 4gb ram, 2.20ghrtz 64 bit system running my beloved Windows 7 with word and outlook 2003.
Looking for something as big, perhaps a little lighter and certainly faster, that has a disc drive, and ports for my trackball.
I refuse to consider Dell.
Yes I know, Applehead, they are wonderful but no thanks.
Any recommendations?
Who cares, most people here have the "all forums" option in effect anyway..........
BWT, I thought you got laid off as the "forum monitor" several months ago?
A lot of the new laptops are coming out with Windows 7, surprisingly.
Oh, sorry, this is only 1.5 ghz. It is very light, still sturdy, no drives, has USB, VGA, and HDMI which I haven’t been able to get to output the screen (I’d prefer that).
>>Haters gonna hate.
It’s not “hate”. Alienware IS a subsidiary of Dell now.
Alienware is Dell with cool LEDs and hipster-approved cases.
OH NOOOOOOSSS!!
I was just going to put on my hipster glasses and big headphones....
Every HP I have had, 3 desktops, have all failed and locked up.......................
I’m with you. No HP/Compaqs. I still get warranty and service repair requests even though I don’t do them any more since I am somehow still working full time. 90% are HP and Compaq.
Own two Asus laptops. Oldest one is 3 years old. Never given me a problem.
Steer clear of anything with the names Lenovo, HP, Dell, Gateway and MSI on them. I cannot tell you how many of these I've fixed (physical repairs, HDD's and undoing crapware installed on them for friends and family.) If you gave me one of these I'd just pitch it in the garbage for all they're worth. Crappy build quality.
Wrong forum.

Don’t forget your onesie PJs and mug of cocoa! ;-)
You want speed? Either find something with an SSD, or get one and clone the drive yourself.

Do yourself a MASSIVE favor and don’t get one that has Winblows 8.1 installed.
If so, at least get one with “downgrade”(their words) rights for Windows 7 professional, and make sure the installation media is included!
Also make SURE it has 64bit hardware. No point in getting anything with 32bit hardware anymore, unless you have a ‘legacy’ application that some how depends on it.
If you have no alternative with the installed OS being Win 8.1, find another laptop all together, opt for NO pre-installed OS - insisting on a discount, and install Linux on it. You’ll thank yourself many times later. I expect Microsoft to throw Win 8 from the train faster than they did Vista. It indeed sucks THAT bad.(don’t let anyone tell you otherwise)
I have this $250 Asus I got, uh, last year sometime at Best Buy; the same model remains available in the local BB stores, but bundled with a printer pushing the price up. It came with 8.0 installed, and I upgraded to 8.1. I prefer to use it hooked to the TV, with a wireless keyboard and mouse, because of the abominable scratchpad thing that is in lieu of mouse (wtf those dont come with an off switch, Id really like to know). This isnt a netbook style, its a normal sized screen. Ill FReepmail you more details if you want.

Please do!
PS: Also get one with a SSD.
I think he's trying to tell you to buy a Chromebook. ;-)
Cheap, but they don't run Windows (if that's what you need.)
Dittos to what Badger says. Ixnay on the D’achenpee-ay. They are strictly a printer company these days, and not very good at it, at that.
Yes. Ive had 4 of their laptops and Ive used their motherboards in desktops for many years. I only replace them because Im a techie and need more, faster, bigger, etc. I sell them to friends when I upgrade and theyre all still running.

I am not a techie and I still need more more more. Had desktop with a cute blue light and picture window into the cpu. Teenage boys were impressed.
