Two additional colossal statues of Amenhotep III were unveiled in Luxor yesterday, along with a carved alabaster head from another Amenhotep III statue. Archaeologists say that the severely damaged statues, carved from red quartzite, are now situated on their original sites at the pharaohs funerary temple. The first depicts Amenhotep III in a seated position, wearing a royal pleated kilt held at the waist by a decorated belt. The second shows the king standing and has been placed at the north gate of the temple. The statues had lain in pieces for centuries in the fields, damaged by destructive forces of nature like earthquakes, and later by irrigation water, salt, encroachment and vandalism, archaeologist Hourig Sourouzian told the Sydney Morning Herald. The alabaster head shows signs of restoration work.

I wish those statues were there when I was in Vegas.

Give ‘em time, but when they go up, get there before they’re torn down to build the next pile of tacky tasteless crap. :’)
Ha! It is tacky, very tacky! The wife and I have been there once. We spent all of our time looking at the hotels, lobbies, casinos, pools, etc. We gambled less than $10 in 4 days.
Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair!
The muslims will declare jihad, and blow them up.
I’d say they’re in pretty good shape, considering. The statue of the wife sure is puny by comparison.
Ozymand-hotep?
Never been to Vegas, but I spent an afternoon in Atlantic City in the late 80s. Superficially glitzy cheapness and tacky all rolled into one big ball of sleaze. The bag ladies from New York ran the slots, while Asians from Japan and Hong Kong were at the craps and roulette tables repatriating our money by giving it to the mob.
I spent $20 at the slots, and immediately wondered how I could get those five minutes of my life back.
I have no desire to go to Vegas.
Hey, she was lucky she got on there at all.
I guess on the up side, it exposes many people who will never get to travel abroad to fake vanished cultures. :’)

How true!
:’) That would be Ramses II. He also had some big-a’d statues made of himself, also had other pharaohs’ likenesses recarved to his own features.

I spent 75 cents on slots.
And I’ll bet you wish you had it back, too.
