Gym tells woman to cover up because her ‘toned body’ intimidated others

The Planet Fitness gym in Richmond, California is standing behind their dress code policy after one member claimed that she was told to put a shirt over her intimidatingly toned body.

As reported by KTVU Channel 2, Tiffany Austin was recovering from a car accident and getting back in shape with her first workout at the gym. However, her time exercising was cut short when a Planet Fitness employee stopped her. Austin explained, “She says, you know, ‘Excuse me, we've had some complaints. You're intimidating people with your toned body. So can you put on a shirt?’”

Ms. Austin was wearing a spaghetti strap tank top and capri pants with her midriff exposed, and she doesn’t think her attire was out of line. “I don’t feel like it’s anything crazy, but I mean you tell me if it’s burning your eyes,” Austin said with a laugh. Reportedly she was only told that the gym dress code prohibited wearing string tank tops. The Planet Fitness customer agreed to wear one of the shirts the gym provides patrons for free, but while she waited for the tee, another employee approached her with objections to her clothing. Feeling harassed and intimidated herself, Austin decided to get her money back and cancel her membership at the gym advertised as the “Judgement Free Zone” whose policy bans “gymtimidation.” McCall Gosselin, Planet Fitness spokesperson, said that criticizing Austin for being toned, “…is not in line with the Planet Fitness policy whatsoever.”

Planet Fitness is not a gym. It’s a social club for wussies.

I guess it did. Yep, that skank ho sure got what was coming to her.

LMAO

You folks are way too damned sensitive.

Perhaps they should just provide the tranquilizers to the folks who are experiencing too much stress because they’ve eaten like a pig for the last two decades, and can’t deal with reality any longer.

“I dunno. I see a little pooch around the tummy.”

I know a little pooch that would get on her tummy.

What on earth are you talking about? Nobody "got" anything. All that happened was that someone left a business that she found uncomfortable to go to one where she was comfortable. There's nobody being punished or getting "what was coming to her."

Or are you talking about the woman in the story, a woman who is upset that she was asked to put on a t-shirt. Oh, the horror! Oh, the oppression!

This is an example of what I call the "war against achievement."

Really? Planet Fitness is a private company that has concluded after extensive marketing studies that there are millions of potential customers who would like to join fitness clubs, but don't because they are too intimidated by the hard-bodies in skin-tight spandex who grunt and groan throughout their workouts. In an effort to capture this market. Planet Fitness has spent millions of dollars on the very successful "no-lunks", "no-groaning," "no-gymtimidation," "judgment free zone" ad campaign in which it guarantees that its members will not have to subject themselves to hard-body, exhibitionist, muscle-heads who grunt, groan, and rain sweat with every breath. This is Planet Fitness' brand image, much like McDonald's and its golden arches. Unlike many other businesses, politicians, and habitual complainers, however, Planet Fitness actually backs up its product by revoking the membership of habitual groaners and spandex flashers. Rather than complaining that Planet Fitness is engaging in a war against achievement," you ought to be congratulating Planet Fitness for its own achievement in carving out a marketable and profitable niche in the very competitive health and fitness sector.

Except Planet Fatness has little to do with "health" or "fitness".

But, hey - free cookies & pizza at the front desk!

My gym won’t order 100lbs plates because “most of the staff won’t be able to pick them up to put them away”.

1. You are supposed to clean up your own messes when you are done. Rack your plates.

2. Isn’t this a gym? Get stronger.

3. They have dumbbells that go to 130lbs. Who puts those away? Then again, there’s only a handful of us working out there that actually have a use for them.

Despite that, it’s the closest gym to my house, price is right with no annual contract, they are ok with at least a moderate amount of grunting/noise making (as long as you don’t sound like a rhino in heat), and they just put in another heavy-duty squat rack...

Long story short, if you don’t like your gym...take your money elsewhere. Each place will be different.

This gal’s story smells like “I crave attention” and Planet Fatness is pretty notorious for being asshats. They deserve each other...

Before reading the article, I imagined a woman who had huge muscles like those seen on women body builders. This woman looks nice, but not sure I see anything intimidating. I see numerous women far more toned and wearing skimpier workout attire at my gym.

I think most women would be happy to have a body like hers, but if they are intimidated by her body, they are the ones with a problem, not her.

Seriously Bubba, you never even read the article did you.

She agreed to put on a shirt they provided, and still got guff from another employee.

What the hell is wrong with you?

Are you over 200 pounds in excess of what you should be? Why are you defending this idiocy? Take a look at her. You honestly think that woman deserves to be taken to task?

If you do, then you and I have nothing to talk about here. We’re not even remotely close to agreement.

One of their catch phrases is that no one will be criticized. What’s this? This woman is singled out because on her first time in, she broke this cardinal rule. And she agreed to comply and that still wasn’t good enough.

What on earth am I talking about? You really wouldn’t know would you. Man you’re clueless.

She looks great.

and even after a car accident?

Put posters of her around to inspire others and use her in commercials for the gym, turn the publicity from the story into $$$

anyone and we mean anyone, will not include people who are normal sized or perhaps already fit, in which case we will be as mean and vindictive as we can possibly be so the sows and hippos who regularly wallow here can lead fulfilled lives without having to confront reality

judgement free will only apply to those in excess of 300 pounds, or 250 pounds for bi-peds under 5 feet tall

as for being kind and courteous to our patrons, some restrictions may apply

“I guess I don’t know what ‘toned’ means. If it means have a soft tummy, then yeah - she’s toned.”

You and me both. My first wife was an amateur body builder. If this is what they think is “toned”, they have no idea what they are talking about...

I don’t think she’s the one to refer to herself in those terms. Those who complained obviously did. And compared to them, she probably does look incredibly toned.

Sad really...
