Gym tells woman to cover up because her ‘toned body’ intimidated others

The Planet Fitness gym in Richmond, California is standing behind their dress code policy after one member claimed that she was told to put a shirt over her intimidatingly toned body.

As reported by KTVU Channel 2, Tiffany Austin was recovering from a car accident and getting back in shape with her first workout at the gym. However, her time exercising was cut short when a Planet Fitness employee stopped her. Austin explained, “She says, you know, ‘Excuse me, we've had some complaints. You're intimidating people with your toned body. So can you put on a shirt?’”

Ms. Austin was wearing a spaghetti strap tank top and capri pants with her midriff exposed, and she doesn’t think her attire was out of line. “I don’t feel like it’s anything crazy, but I mean you tell me if it’s burning your eyes,” Austin said with a laugh. Reportedly she was only told that the gym dress code prohibited wearing string tank tops. The Planet Fitness customer agreed to wear one of the shirts the gym provides patrons for free, but while she waited for the tee, another employee approached her with objections to her clothing. Feeling harassed and intimidated herself, Austin decided to get her money back and cancel her membership at the gym advertised as the “Judgement Free Zone” whose policy bans “gymtimidation.” McCall Gosselin, Planet Fitness spokesperson, said that criticizing Austin for being toned, “…is not in line with the Planet Fitness policy whatsoever.”

“I don’t think she’s the one to refer to herself in those terms. “

Yeah, you are probably right. Didn’t think of that...

“toned”?

Kind of pudgy for toned.

Gyms have State health regulations about keeping sweat off equipment so shirts are required.

No problem. It’s easy to blur things in a story like this.

The Planet Fitness customer agreed to wear one of the shirts the gym provides patrons for free, but while she waited for the tee, another employee approached her with objections to her clothing.

So she was approached twice, the 2nd apparently unbeknownst to the first.

Full disclosure: I DO go to Planet Fitness: best cost no contract.
I can only comment on MY gym but it is plainly posted on the wall by the front desk: no bare midriffs. No head gear or coverings except baseball caps and a list of others do’s and don’t’s.

Yeah there is a lunk alarm which usually only goes off when someone really rings the weights.

And YES you ARE supposed to wipe down the equipment after you are done, using the paper towel in the dispensers no more than 20’ from any machine and the spray bottle of mild cleaner.

Its not that hard.

Not sure why this woman went to the press with this whiney story. As far as her being told she was “intimidating” I think the employee was trying to be nice but I think I would have said We have a policy...

In a sane world seeing another woman at the gym who looks fabulous would only make you work out harder.

Ofcourse, we don't like in a sane world.

There is a chick at my gym with a perfect butt. I do my squats just a bit deeper after I see her. (:

And then she went to the media and complained about it.

Are you over 200 pounds in excess of what you should be? Why are you defending this idiocy?

Unless I should be five pounds at 6'3", the answer to your first question is "no." And I'm defending it because this attention whore got her little feelings hurt when multiple customers asked Planet Fitness to enforce their policies--the ones they sold their product on--then she called the media instead of handling it like an adult.

Yeah, she agreed to put on the shirt, and while one worker was getting it for her, another one, who didn't know she'd already been talked to, came to her. An adult would have said. "Yeah, they're getting me a shirt now " This woman threw a hissy fit, demanded her money back, then called the local TV station.

So I have to wonder why YOU are defending her.

Indeed, she is pleasant. And that's not a bad thing, but it tells me the other women must be floppin' around like beached sea cows.

Thoroughly bizarre - one might be forgiven for believing that the whole PURPOSE of a gym was to get toned.

Wow, so now we're going to play like a third grader, correcting the other to prove superiority. As if...

Why am I defending her? Well ace, if you've ever been around heavy set women bending over and doing exercise, you'll know that they show off a wee bit of skin themselves.

So what we have going on here is discrimination based on a person who isn't a fat slob hippo.

And how do you know this woman didn't tell him the other guy was getting her a shirt. You don't know what transpired between them. You just assume this woman was wrong all the way along.

As for her calling the media, why not? You think the fat slobs wouldn't have called the media if the owners hadn't stepped in to make sure decent skin wasn't shown?

You don't know that.
