Four Georgia football players, including safety Tray Matthews, turned themselves in to authorities and were arrested Monday night on multiple charges of theft by deception.
Others arrested were wide receiver Uriah LeMay, defensive lineman John Taylor and defensive end James DeLoach. They were all charged with multiple counts of misdemeanor theft. Three of the players -- Matthews, Taylor and DeLoach -- are accused of double-cashing their stipend checks while LeMay is charged with depositing his roommates' stipend check.
"Matthews, DeLoach and Taylor would basically take that check and deposit it through a mobile banking app. And then within a short period of time would go to a local convenience store and cash the checks. So they basically would cash the check twice," UGA chief of police Jimmy Williamson told the Macon Telegraph.
The four players were released on bond Monday night, with bond at $1,500 per charge. Misdemeanor theft means the charge is for stealing something less than $500 per charge.
Georgia head coach Mark Richt released a statement Tuesday morning:
"I'm aware of the situation and it will be handled in an appropriate way."
The Bulldogs are scheduled to start 2014 spring practice on Tuesday.
Matthews started six games as a freshman last year and was expected to compete for the starting spot at free safety.
DeLoach, who will be a junior this fall, has rarely played and moved to defensive end. Taylor, who will be a redshirt sophomore, had nine tackles and a sack last season. LeMay redshirted as a freshman last season
It’s almost as bad as North Carolina’s diploma mill!
To be fair part Georgia disciplines its players more often and more harshly than most other football factories. Other schools around the South East are sprinkled with players kicked out of Georgia for behavior issues.
Rather than Son of Liberty, I think your reflection on your parents is down the scale considerably.
After your round ball team loses four seniors this year will you claim to be a tennis school?
Three back to back 11 win seasons.
How many ganes has your team won?
Georgia’s first game in 2014 is Clemson, second game is South Carolina. I agree, nothing games.
Nah, a Women’s Gymnastics School. ;)
How many SEC Championships in those years? Make it easier, how many Eastern Championships in those years? At least you can claim the state of SC championships those years.
And what has your team done?
You almost sound like a Clemson Tiger.
My what brilliant minds to not realize that cashing a check twice would be discovered in very short order, future lawyers, politicians and sports announcers in training.
What, you couldn’t pass the test?
I did not know the schedules and basically could care less. My comment is that most, MOST, college Division 1 teams start out with some low level, Division 1-AA or Division II type school, basically as a scrimmage game to get them going since college teams do not play exhibition games before the season. Thus, my comment. I really don’t care if they opened their season with Florida State and Ohio State or BYU, LSU, NYU, TCU, USC, ASU, FamU, or Slippy Rock.
Time for Spurrier to ride into the sunset before the old man embarrasses himself.
Whatever you say, Mrs. Spurrier.
Pretty dramatic. What's the Ole Ball Coach gonna do? Come key my car?
I root for Spurrier every game, well, except one, every year.
