Word For The Day, Tuesday March 18, 2014
In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
idiosyncratic [id-ee-oh-sin-krat-ik, -sing-]
-adj
pertaining to the nature of idiosyncrasy, or something peculiar to an individual
la velocidad [beh-lohs-ee-DAHD]

La velocidad de los trenes japoneses es increíble.
The speed of Japanese trains is amazing.
Well, Weird Science gave me this one as an earworm instead...
“It’s poetry in motion
She turned her tender eyes to me
As deep as any ocean
As sweet as any harmony
But she blinded me with science
She blinded me with science
And failed me in biology
When I’m dancing close to her
Blinding me with science,
I can smell the chemicals
Blinding me with science, science!
Science
Science”
Oh, my God but the cost of a guest meal has gone up-I’d be in a bad way if I had a cub getting married now...
You are seriously ahead of the game. We just started talking about that stuff.
OK, they’ve been talking about it for months I’ve just been informed LOL.
She’s tidied up and I can’t find anything!
Eh, it’s still the regular season and against the west.
That’s cool-I can amuse myself...
xsfiance has just enough WOMAN in him to need to be informed, but no time to really do much as far as having input, so we are coddling his feelings and keeping him up to date. as xsteen says, she is fine doing everything herself, she enjoys it, and she is competent organized, but she doesn’t want him feeling left out. he is not the YOU DECIDE AND I WILL WRITE THE CHECK type that xshub is.
i’m sure it has gone up everywhere. i can’t even recall the per plate price we paid 29 years ago in Pittsburgh, but i do know Pittsburgh was cheaper than DC which is why we got married there. so factor in DC prices and time passing and yes, it’s a good bit more than we paid.
A lot of the price depends on the venue.
Plus general inflation
Plus DC is really its own planet.
Ours is pricey but we could have gone elsewhere for half, maybe less than half.
Glad I’m not paying for it
:)
I thought the cookie table was more an ethnic kind of thing, not regional. But what do I know?
I’m thinking we paid something like $20/person in 1997 at the firehall. And that was for the whole shebang - hall rental, food, bar.
Well regions with lots of ethnics
:)
I am headed out to vote and my doctor’s appointment. Our mayor was recently arrested for DWI, so I expect the good citizens to throw the bum out. Every scandal, we get a new mayor, it’s how it works here. After doing my part, I get the shot in the knee to help me walk pain free again. Woo, hoo! I am off....
her parents had a good long time to save up for that affair ; )
Ouch.
that’s exactly it, it’s a holdover from the firehall days when the ladies auxiliary would serve up chicken riggies and there would be a huge table of homemade pizzelles and other cookies. now weddings in restaurants and other venues do it too, as a hat tip to the olden days. but it’s done by the family. yes, soother, your wedding sounds like the olden days to me, bc that’s what my peers were doing in the early 80s : )
my SIL is offering to make buckeyes, but will need to assemble them at my house bc it will be too hot to be dragging them up from TX in early Sept. i am not yet sure about that.
just sayin.... : )
of course, in 10 more years xshub and i will likely be retired if not in a HOME so xsgirls need to get while the getting is good ; )
We did hire someone to do the cake and cookies. That wasn’t part of the firehall deal.
Yeah, they no longer have the ladies auxiliary there. You have to bring in an outside caterer now.
