Apple Designer Jonathan Ive on What's Next
Time ^ | March 17, 2014 | John Arlidge

Posted on 03/17/2014 9:08:13 PM PDT by Swordmaker

Apple's design chief helped transform computing, phones and music. The company's secrecy and Ive's modesty mean he has never given an in-depth interview—until now.

'Hello. Thanks for Coming'

We use Jonathan Ive’s products to help us to eat, drink and sleep, to work, travel, relax, read, listen and watch, to shop, chat, date and have sex. Many of us spend more time with his screens than with our families. Some of us like his screens more than our families. For years, Ive’s natural shyness, coupled with the secrecy bordering on paranoia of his employer, Apple, has meant we have known little about the man who shapes the future, with such innovations as the iMac, the iPod, the iPhone and the iPad. But last month, he invited me to Cupertino in Silicon Valley where Apple is based, for his first in-depth interview since he became head of design almost 20 years ago.

The gods — or was it the ghost of Steve Jobs? — seemed against it. Jobs didn’t like Apple execs doing interviews. It had not rained properly in California for months but that morning the clouds rolled off the Pacific, turning the Golden Gate Bridge black. Interstate 280 South to Silicon Valley was a river of water, instead of the usual lava streaks of stop-start SUVs. But just after 10AM, an Apple tech-head appeared in an all-white meeting room on the first floor of building 4 of the firm’s antiseptic headquarters with strict instructions to find an Earl Grey tea bag.

And ...

When Ive sees customers queueing overnight to buy the latest iPhone, does he worry that we have become too obsessed with the latest “this” or “that”, that we are genuflecting at the altar of technology? A phone is just a phone, not the second coming of Christ. “What people are responding to is much bigger than the object. They are responding to something rare — a group of people who do more than simply make something work, they make the very best products they possibly can. It’s a demonstration against thoughtlessness and carelessness,” he says.

So true ... so many other companies who are thoughtless and careless.

“...When Cook said nothing like that! The media, using that SINGLE SOURCE repeated that claim as fact.”

So we got that incident wrong which leads to the conclusion that Apple is conservative friendly? Good product/bad product, great debate material, but Apple financially supports the left and all that entails. So do lots of other companies, especially tech companies, but then why not just say Apple is run by a bunch of dicks but they make products I like?

Otherwise known as an “I don’t want a $200 a month data plan” paradigm. I’d rather use that money on ammo.

What's that got to do with an iPhone??? There are unlimited data And voice plans for under $100 out there. For $200 you can have THREE iPhones and TWO iPads sharing unlimited. Sheesh.

I don’t want my music on the cloud. I want it on my phone. It keeps my data charges down and I don’t have to rely on service when I’m riding my motorcycle through the Sonoran desert, which I do for about 90 minutes a day, five days a week.

I’m not particularly concerned with your objections to my reasoning. The iPhone doesn’t work for me. That’s why I still carry my Galaxy.

Neither way. . . Apple as a company spends very little on political contributions. . . far less in fact than Microsoft, Amazon, Google, or Samsung. . . . especially on lobbying. There is an Apple Employee' PAC. . . that supports Democrats over Republicans by about 80/20. But what employees's PAC doesn't. That's where the money against the California initiatives came from. The Board of Directors is split about sixty-forty liberal to conservative. . . so they really don't take too many extreme political stands. They mostly just don't do anything politically as a company. . . and stand neutral. Which is strange considering the REPUTATION people have attributed to them because of the assumed biases of the people who bought and used their products.

That turns out to be more myth than fact. Strangely, the New York Times did a survey of the political leanings of their Mac using subscribers about ten years ago. . . and found, much to the surveyor's shock, 43% of the Mac users self-identified themselves as CONSERVATIVE!! Of the remainder, 25% claimed independent, and 27% were Liberal. The balance declined to state. LOL!

Steve Jobs had a moderately Liberal reputation, but have you heard the commencement speech he gave at Stanford? Nothing better has been said by most conservatives. If he had taken the time to really think about it, he probably would have switched to conservative thinking. The ideas he truly thought about and believed in were. It's only when he spoke quickly and without thinking, did he spout Liberal mantras. . . philosophically, his ideas were conservative. Look at his stand against pornography on the Apple App Store.

I have an unlimited data plan for under $30 on my iPad. No limits! (And no longer available to others, but I'm happy.)

I analyzed my data usage and found I never got anywhere near needing that and gave up the unlimited $30 plan in exchange for adding my iPad to my originally 10GB shared family plan for only $10. Now that's gone unlimited and still just $10 added to the shared plan. . . much cheaper than $30 Per month plus taxes. So I now have 3 iPhones and 2 iPads on a shared family plan. . . and they kept lowering the cost and upping the limits over three months from when I first switched. Ain't competition wunnerful?

Seriously though, Apple may have the best product in the world. But I would NEVER buy this incompatible, lackluster, overpriced, inherently obsolete product. Not primarily because of the previously mentioned negative attributes. But primarily because of the Pushy, Fanatical, Wild Eyed Apple Evangelists. They are worse than any street preacher or Mormon knocking at your door that I ever encountered. I just couldn’t be involved in something that would make a person so defensive of a piece of technology.

Apple, time magazine, the author of the article, and the article itself are way too fruity.

Absolutely. Thanks for the tip, not necessary in my case. My wife has her own iPad, but shares the unlimited access of mine everywhere we travel. These are indispensable tools, that line of reasoning is lost on the unreasonable.

You’re probably talking to an old feller who still drives to Best Buy to purchase music CDs and PC software on DVDs.

... And the retiree tooling his Honda Goldwing through the desert happily not paying for streaming charges, well gosh, how much Steppenwolf can one possibly listen to that would blow the basic data service on a typical streaming plan?

Even today some people still plan their next AT-form factor PC clone as being a sheet metal mini tower full of otherwise empty space and expansion cards mounted at a 90 degree angle to their motherboard surrounded by a rats nest of tangled cables and clotted mats of dust bunnies made of cat fur and cigarette tar. That commie MacPro just don’t LOOK right, dagnabbit.

They regard Apple users as Socialist queers and never stop to think what the ‘MS’ in ‘MSNBC’ stands for. Sure isn’t Apple. It’s like they have a bone growing through their brain.

Old user is old. Let em use their Windows 8.2.25.a Service Pack 5 for all I care. Their grandkids are probably still wondering why grampa’s never managed to figure out how to get the video cam working all these years or where that letter icon where he gets his email went or why his audio sounds like it’s coming from the bottom of a well. Maybe they’ll come over and take a whack at fixing it for him next Thanksgiving, if he can find his install DVD and serial number.

Incompatible with what? Overpriced compared to exactly what? Obsolete, how? You are the one making judgements based on something with no experience. The Mac is the only computer that can essentially run 100% of the software out there. . . including all of your Windows software. So, exactly how is it incompatible??? Overpriced? Attempts to construct a Windows 8 machine approaching the specs of the new MacPro MISSED by over $2000 higher. Even trying to scratch build a Windows 8 machine at the low end of the MacPro line with equivalent hardware failed to beat the Apple price. So you are wrong again. Obsolete? There's nothing out there in the Windows world that even comes close to matching that cutting edge according to the reviewers in PC magazines and pro user forums. It's amazing how Apple brings out the ignorant attack dogs who really don't know a thing about what they're talking about but love to spout myths. So, please, Samurai_Jack, tell us exactly with what, and how Apple products incompatible. Let US, who use them in industry benefit from your fount of infinite knowledge. Please. Or am I just one of those wild-eyed, pushy, fanatical Apple Evangelists—who happens to earn the majority of my income from providing support users of Windows computers?

I went from a Galaxy loaded with 64GB of music to an iPhone that lets me have 8.

Why didn't you buy the 64GB iPhone?

I did.

It’s all about buying memory for a 1000 times cheaper than buying it from Apple. Streaming is great if you are at home, have unlimited data or you have a exhibitionist fetish for the NSA.
