Raised in Chicago I took “everything but ketchup” to heart, I never use the stuff on anything. Just don’t like it, too sweet.

Every American knows that only Mustard,Onions, and Relish are allowed on hot dogs. Duh.
To: kalee
Usually I choose Carolina style; chili, mustard, onions, and slaw.

Its bad enough that my wife puts ketchup on her hotdogs she also puts it on her steak! Its an addiction.
Personally I have fallen in "like" with ketchup in my later years. I love ketchup on scrambled eggs/omlettes. I can't imagine a hotdog without ketchup (although mustard and relish are key too).
Ketchup is like a good scotch though...you have to adapt to your brand. For me it's Heinz (yes I know...horrors), but they make a good ketchup. I relax my political views when it comes to condiments.

Dark, spicy mustard and chopped onions.

I don’t know what I was thinking, but one day I put peanut butter on a boiled hot dog and it was dee-lish!

Onions, relish, chili, cheese, mustard or sometimes just fried with barbeque sauce. Outside over an open fire mustard is all I need. But I always keep plenty on Ketchup for the grandkidsWait I forgot sauerkraut and horseradish mustard, but usually go to Andouille or polish sausage for that.

I am assuming the publication is from NYC. An NYC hot dog, which I consider the be the best hot dog (just sitting in water all day at petri dish temperature) is a dog with mustard and maybe sourkraut. I love sour kraut, so that goes on hot dogs, and kielbasa (or kiebasi/kievasa). A nice Spicy brown mustard is good. Kosciusko (sp?) is best.
That said, sweet relish has it's place. A good chili dog is nice. You can melt American Cheese on it.
Any this is America, so if you want to put “Red” ketchup, and give money to the Heinz family, this is the 21st Century. America's got room for communists. It's OK.
All kidding aside, I'm set to got to NYC in a few weeks for a day (personal). I worked in NYC for six months straight. Left. Was back after 9/11, a day or two a week, for 6 months or so. Haven't been to Manhattan in 10 years. When I was there, kebab stands were starting out. Random pizza slices were the best pizza in the country. Hot dogs were everywhere. Coffee stands. roasted nuts. The hands down best street food was Knish.
Knish. I was there with a woman (long story...actually a friend of my wife) from California, and I was sort of obsessing over Kinish. She got annoyed, as the people I hang out with are wont to do. Finally, a block from Battery Park, I find a guy selling Knish. “Two with MUSTARD”. I give her one. I got email, part of every phone call, for months, asked about Knish.
Knish, with mustard...best NYC street food. No doubt.
