For millions of families in the United States, childcare is their single largest household expense at nearly $15,000 a year, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said Wednesday in a speech on the Senate floor.
And in an economy where most families have two working parents, childcare isnt a luxuryits a necessity.
The Senate on Thursday is scheduled to vote on a bill that would amend and reauthorize through fiscal year 2020 the Child Care and Development Block Grant Act of 1990. The program provides funding to the states for child-care subsidies for low-income families, as well as money to improve the quality of child care.

I don’t need it.
Guns for self-defense: Isnt a Luxury; Its a Necessity
Why can’t the low income people do what I did. Get a family member to watch the kids. Also I worked a different shift so I could be home when the wife worked.
Nor are they a privilege; they’re a right.
Daycare is not a necessity when children are raised in a home with a loving parent who stays home to raise them.
So’s beer, just ask any drunk
The end goal is complete government control of all aspects of life, as in communism.
Well so is beer just saying
Darn, beat me to it ;- )
They literally are going to take our paychecks through taxes and give us a small stipen. It will be like being a teenager and given an allowance but everything else will be paid for you. I still don’t get people who feel it should be free. I would rather pay day care for six years or so than for the rest of my life. I feel the same with College. So what if it takes 10 years to pay the loan. It beats still “paying” for it at 80. People are so stupid!!!
Here’s a thought, Hairy. How about cutting spending (and, therefore income taxes) so that one spouse might be able to stay home and raise good children.
You argument fails on two points.
not everyone has available family to babysit. I’m in this bracket. My family lives out of state and those here work, including my aging mother. My mother in law has serious health problems and is not available on a regular basis.
Not everyone works a job with such availability. Unless you are suggesting someone scrap their career or seek out such a job, it simply is not realistic. We rarely get what we wnt and instead take what we can get and make do. That’s reality. We are free to try and find jobs that better meet our lifestyle needs but it can take time. It took me 5 years to land a permanent position.
My fiance and I are deep in this issue. We both work and both want to work. Our daughter is 2 and we have swapped roles between working and staying home. Our child was in daycare but she was constantly sick and someone had to be able to take off to get her if the need arises. At the moment my fiance is not working and was laid off a few weeks ago so now she is at home. Our combined salary was around 80k. Now it has been cut almost in half.
daycare is not a right but I wonder how some people make it, especially single parents. Daycare is expensive. We have heavily struggled to make ends meet and to keep our jobs. When you do contract work, they don’t give a crap about your kid or your reasons for not coming in. If you don’t show up you get let go. Thankfully I found something full time and perm so I’m not dealing with the use and abusive, zero hour bs that is contract IT work.
Marxism isn’t a luxury, it’s a necessity!
Pray America wakes up
Which is hard to do in a single parent household where the mother has to work. Or are you suggesting she go on welfare?
And in single parent households?
Daycare’s not a luxury. IT’S MANDATORY!
For single working mothers, it is.
And Reid supports policies that expand families consisting of single working mothers.
And what should they do to discourage them?
