Richard Coogan, who played Captain Video on the early TV sci-fi adventure series Captain Video and His Video Rangers, died Wednesday in Los Angeles. He was 99.

The MAD magazine parody of his show “Captain TVideo” was in the September, 1954 issue.
He retired 50 years ago.
This sounds ridiculous, but I always feel bad for the family when a person goes at 99 because most have a huge party for the person at 100. My great aunt turned 99 in January and we are planning a big bash for her in January 2015….however the plans must be very liquid.
I had all the goodies! The cardboard spaceship, helmets etc.
I remember an old Gene Autry serial about the “Thunder Riders” who were invaders from Mars or maybe some other place in space.
It was pretty entertaining tho really crude compared to modern special effects.

I think I got a picture of a flying saucer a couple of days ago. Anytime a military aircraft flies over, I often take a picture of it. I heard this one but by the time I got out to the porch it was too far away. I took a single shot anyway. When I cropped it to see it better, there was another craft way in the back ground.
A few years ago, TCM was running the Flash Gordon serial. They had cardboard props too, but I think the spaceship was 1/4" plywood...
At least some of it was.

I remember when I was around 6 or 7 around 1953, my Brothers would take me to the “Bay Theater” on Saturdays. There was always a Roy Rogers, Gen Autry, or Tarzan movie on. First thing was a serial. My favorite one was “Rocket Man” each episode always ended with a cliff hanger. In fact sometimes it actually was one of him being thrown off a cliff.
In the next episode he starts off waking half way down and managing to turn on the control for his rocket pack and escaping.
My least favorite was one of the cavalry chasing a gang of what must have been outlaws or the outlaws chasing the cavalry.

It’s not ridiculous. Have a party now, then you can have another party on the big day. There are no rules that I know of forbidding having more than one party. There may be some travel for some folks, but that is not as important as having a good bash.
The movie serials were a bit before my time, but I’ve picked up an assortment of them on tape and dvd over the years. Sometimes a bit silly, sometimes a bit juvenile... but often intriguing as americana. Heck, the last serial I watched was a 15-chapter silent serial from 1919, “Lightning Bryce.” One of the few silent ones still surviving in complete form. I thought it was pretty good.
Cynthia Lynn of Hogan’s Heroes passed away too.
Only Cpl Lebeau (Robert Clary) is left from the series.
