**SNIP**
Late last week, it came to light a class of seventh-grade female students at Stephen Decatur Middle School had been required to make clay models of male genitalia as part of the Family Life and Human Development program taught in county schools to students in grades 5-11. While most agree the course, which teaches students about their changing bodies and making good decisions, is an important one for the students, few agreed making clay models of the male reproductive organs was an appropriate component of the program.

Luzier said the girls in the class made life-size male genitalia with tinsel for hair and Easter eggs representing testicles. She said there must be some better way to teach the male anatomy including posters, text books or approved models.
The fact that the girls had to make these, touch them, handle them and have them around in the classroom is unacceptable, she said. They had to present them to the rest of the class. The little girls were embarrassed and humiliated.

The teaching strategy of constructing models is a highly effective and appropriate strategy for studying and learning about body systems in science, for example the digestive system or the circulatory system, said Witherow. However, when addressing the sensitive nature of this material, model making with middle school students is inappropriate. As part of the investigation of what has occurred, the teacher has been made aware of this and this activity will be excluded from all future lessons.

But making models for intestines and not making models for genitals would be DISCRIMINATION!
I see they are studying about the Clintons =)
A cooked strand of spaghetti noodle would represent Clinton’s.
Awww, how nice. She's been "made aware" that it's inappropriate?!?! Any teacher with judgment this piss-poor should be fired immediately. And don't tell me this "lesson" didn't have the approval of the administration -- teachers can't blow their noses without it. I hope the parents at this school district don't let this go. Outrageous!
Teacher needs some cell time.
Made aware? MADE AWARE?
Young girls are so sensitive to sex. Why do people think they gravitate to a-sexual or sexually neutral men in the movies or media? Leave them alone!
I was 25 before I took life study art classes with nude men. By then I had matured enough that this didn’t bother me. Leave our children and young girls alone.
I have lost the ability to speak.
When it comes time to shuffle off this mortal coil, I shall not weep.

Or obozo’s spine.
Wow. Today’s parents can take nothing for granted. Over the first few weeks in a semester, every course should be discussed with a child, when they come home from school. They don’t need to be interrogated, but the family deserves to know if something like this is happening anywhere in that school. These are the same folks who go all batty when somebody say’s Thanks Be To God!
Did the boys get the chance to sculpt some female genitals? I accuse the school of discrimination! :-)
Lazzie, I’m with you.
Well, you can see how they’ll find it a small step to give the girls nude life models next.
One day I picked up my 5th grade son at the school and on the way home he said he and some other boys were talking about girl bodies and how that worked. I told him they had it wrong (which they did) and I gave him a book that described how male and female bodies worked - with separate drawings of the two bodies, just like a diagram on a doctor’s wall has a drawing of the body. He went to school the next day and told the boys what he had learned. They were shocked his mother had given him a book all about it.
Sexual function is a body function just as other parts of the body have ways they function. I made no big deal about it so he didn’t after that, either. The “mystery” was gone.
Schools have gone nuts doing idiot things like making clay models. My son attended a fine public school - today, I’d put him in a private Catholic school where scholastic work is the goal rather than probing his sex life to determine if he is straight/homo/transgender. I was a school counselor then associate school psychologist in good public schools but I don’t think they exist anymore. I’d likely get fired my first day in today’s public schools.
Yeah, ranks right up there with literacy and basic math skills. /s
Frikkin' nanny state lefties.
Reminds me of a dirty cartoon. Sheriff tells the men to "form a posse." Comes back, they have done some clay modelling. "No, I said form a POSSE!"
Sounds like the activity was required with one goal in mind only - give the teacher his/her jollies.
So the entire school structure was just fine with the lessons as presented huh? Makes you wonder exactly how many of their teachers are guilty of inapprorpriate activities with their students, confident that the other teacher’s will stay quiet about it.
When I was in the 7th grade I wouldn’t have even known what this looked like. Or the 8th grade. Or the 9th grade. Or, until I was MARRIED! Good grief!
