Couple who found $10m hoard of gold coins could have broken law
Daily mail ^

The Northern Californian couple who found $10 million worth of gold coins on their land could have broken California Law for failing to report their stunning discovery to police, it emerged today.

.....

But, according to Californian Law, the couple should have declared their findings to the police within a ‘reasonable time’ of finding it.

The Californian Civil Code, sub-section 2080, also states that a notice must go in the local paper if the haul is worth more than $250.

Usually, breaking the Civil Code isn’t an arrestable offense but punished with a fine.

.....

But, according to one Gold Country Sheriff’s Department, the matter is taken so seriously that the couple could be called in for questioning and ‘could face arrest’.

About once a week I go to the bank and get some walk around cash, been doing it for 20+ years. I’ve also been doing business with the same bank for as long. I use a money clip and the tellers are always kidding me about my expensive money clip, a clip from an old cell phone holster. it doesn’t bend and expands enough to carry a large amount of bill’s. Around 5 years ago I got a call from one of the tellers at the bank asking me if I was missing something and I said no. She chuckled and said maybe I should check my pockets, yep my money clip was missing. I keep it and my truck keys on the same side and I guess when pulling the key’s out in the parking lot I’d pulled the clip out also and never heard it hit the pavement. A young man about 20 years old with a wife and child had found it in the parking lot and took it into the bank and handed it to the teller. She gave me his name and phone number and I called and offered him 100 dollars for his honesty which he refused. In talking to him I found out he liked to hunt so I invited him out for a weekend deer hunt which he took me up on. he got two nice whitetail bucks and a 10 inch tom turkey. We filled his freezer. 8 days later one of my buddies mentioned needing a tech hand for his pump business and I called the young man up and sent him that way. He’s been working there ever since and makes a damn good living, he takes care of all my down hole pumps on the ranch. Big jump from a minimum wage stocker at our local Walmart. The money clip had 638 dollars in it.

The lawyer they hired, and who guided them through the process of revelation might be able to add some clarity.

Just goes to help prove those who say that nobody can go through a whole day without committing some potentially serious crimes...

I broke out the old metal detector while building my house because of all the artifacts that the excavator was uncovering and I had a really nice hit, I dug down and uncovered a nice fat Artillery shell.

My teenage son and his friends found a wallet in a McDonalds. Instead of giving it to the manager (which meant it never would get returned) they found a phone number and called the house of the owner. They returned the wallet belonging to a teenage girl. Mom and daughter thanked him. As he was driving away, she ran out and gave him her phone number. They dated about four weeks. Then she broke up with him...

I hope this story helps with you moral dilemma? (wink wink)

Never ever tell the govt you have found gold coins. On your property or anywhere else.

I wouldn’t have announced this. At the very least I’d have moved to a non-income tax state and then quietly started selling. Better yet....how about moving to a country where they don’t figure most of what you’ve got belongs to someone else.

They announced it due to trying to make even more  money buy selling the coins as part of the historic Saddle Ridge Hoard. Get it? They were giving the coins a brand to bring in more at auction. Own part of American history!!!  Seems like they got this advice from a coin dealer.

I would have never done this...would have sold off quietly and gotten less money. The couples plan backfired. Now everyone wants a piece of them

Should have talked to a good tax lawyer.

Still, it will be a huge haul unless government decides since it was stolen 100% belongs to the government.

At least melting them down prevents the identification of the source - AKA, formerly stolen coins.

I had the same “found wallet” experience. But the owner who came to my house to pick up the wallet was appreciative. A good lesson was learned.

Yours is the first post which actually makes sense.

I understand and support those who don’t agree. Just saying, there’s a right way to do things.

Either he should have melted it all down, or done the right thing and handed it in to the authorities and hoped for the best.

Just saying.

Lots of ideas out there posted, but this one sounds the best. Seek sound legal advice before disclosing anything to anybody,& get out of Calif. for sure. There may be other states just as bad,but a good lawyer could help in this area. It looks like no matter how you do it,the feds are going to end up with at least a portion of it. Above all,you want to keep it as legal as possible.

I didn’t say “the government,” I said “a court.”

You remember, the entity set up in the first place primarily to settle questions about the ownership of property.

There are quite ancient laws and principles of common law about the ownership of this type of property, which is called “treasure trove,” going back a thousand years or more.

This is not exactly a new issue.

There are tons of coin dealers in California. This couple opted for the publicity of selling off their gold coins as coming from the Saddle Ridge hoard because this would bring higher prices. Customers would want to buy a piece of history. This has all backfired on them.

I would have sold off these coins as anonymously as possible. Driving to different coin dealers all over California, Nevada etc

Good old California, where, when you find stuff ON YOUR PROPERTY, you will be arrested.

Let this be a warning to all: STFU.

Hop on a private jet to Singapore with the gold coins. Switzerland has caved so is useless. Sell them off in Singapore and keep all the money you get in Singapore far away from the communist ObamaTrons. Then move to Australia or Philippines. Buy a nice chunk of land and live off the gold coin proceeds.
