Wal-Mart botches their new 'Buy America' ad campaign
NBC Olympics Coverage ^ | 2/24/2014 | MeganC

Forgive me if someone has posted this already but I searched FR first and found nothing so here goes!

Did anyone see Wal-Mart's new ad during the coverage of the closing ceremonies of the Sochi Olympics last night? Did you just love the images of American factory workers and the inspiring narration about how Wal-Mart is committing to creating jobs in the USA?

And didn't you just love how they reinforced their committment to American jobs with a background track of inspiring music that celebrated the Working Man?

Meaning they used a song called 'Working Man'.

By a band called 'Rush'.

Who are from Canada?

I'm sure Canada appreciates the royalty income their band is generating in a 'Buy American' ad campaign. I'm also not surprised that Wal-Mart didn't even try to find an American band to do their music.

If that’s the only objection you can find to Wal-Mart’s campaign, I’d suggest you stop looking at the trees and focus on the forest.

Actually, I was mentioning to Mr sneakers the other day that Walmart seems to be carrying more things that are labelled “Made in America”. It’s a small step, but it’s in the right direction. Besides, go to any store chain, and most of the goods are made in China or elsewhere.

*Sigh*

To some people, Wal-Mart can do no good. To the 200 million Americans who shop their every week, they're happy to get more bang for their buck while providing more for their families. And, maybe, they'll even have a little bit left over for other things like retirement or to send their kids to college. Damn Wal-Mart for saving people money!

Mike Rowe is part of this Walmart campaign and he’s a very good guy who loves America. I think Walmart can at least bring awareness to the low information people around the country and do some good with this.

One more point, most American rock and pop bands despise America and work against America whenever possible. Think of Springsteen, Bon Jovi, Miley, Gaga etc.. They would have to go country to find a band that loves America.

Not even the labels in Walmart the say “Made in The USA” are made in the USA.

This has nothing to do with economic nationalism.

Wages are rising in China plus fuel prices are rising as well.

American manufacturing is increasingly competitive with Chinese exports.

A larger and larger percentage of goods will be manufactured within NAFTA taking market share from China and other Asian countries. Much of it will have enough American content to be labeled “Made in USA or Assembled in the USA.”

Walmart has been trying to sell US made goods for years. I remember when they had Made in US signs on tables of American made goods.

One of the big problems is that we don't make many things any longer.

Ahem. The campaign is “Made in America”. Canada is also, if you haven’t consulted a map, in America.

Now, if the campaign was “Made in the USA”, you might have a SMALL point. . .

If they had picked an American song it most likely would have been something by that Communist, Bruce Springsteen.

I’d rather Canadians have the money.

It is funny you should mention that. I had dealings (had) with a company sewing garments. I asked how their tags said "Made in the USA," when the factories were in Mexico. Apparently, they thought that making the labels here was enough.
