Songs for the Ages(d)
Vanity | 2/22//2014 | Vanity

Tunes for the Ages(d)\ Beetles – “When I’m 64.” At 73, I wish. Jackson Browne - “In sixty-five I was seventeen (actually 25) and running up one-o-one. I don't know where I'm running now, I'm just running on.” Well, I kind of know where I ‘m running to now. Neil Young –“ Old man look at my life, I'm a lot like you were.” Not sure about that. And Sinatra - “It Was a Very Good Year”. Most have been, not all.

The September Song"

Oh, the days dwindle down to a precious few. September, November. And these few precious days I'll spend with you. These precious days I'll spend with you

Bob Dylan - “There’s not even room enough to be anywhere
It’s not dark yet but it’s gettin’ there.” Grim.

I close my eyes, only for a moment, and the moment’s gone
All my dreams, pass before my eyes, a curiosity
Dust in the wind, all they are is dust in the wind
Same old song, just a drop of water in an endless sea
All we do, crumbles to the ground, though we refuse to see

Dust in the wind, All we are is dust in the wind

Someday in the future the song In The Year 2525 will be nostalgic.

Yesterday When I Was Young.

I think Roy Clark did a well known version of it.

Old Friends/ Simon and Garfunkel

Old friends, old friends
Sat on their park bench like bookends
A newspaper blown through the grass
Falls on the round toes
Of the high shoes of the old friends

Old friends, winter companions, the old men
Lost in their overcoats, waiting for the sunset
The sounds of the city sifting through trees
Settle like dust on the shoulders of the old friends

Can you imagine us years from today
Sharing a park bench quietly?
How terribly strange to be seventy
Old friends, memory brushes the same years
Silently sharing the same fears

I've looked at life from both sides now
From up and down and still somehow
It's life's illusions I recall
I really don't know life at all

Both sides now

Geez Louise, this thread reminds me of a comment a friend made in similar circumstances decades ago - "Why don't you put on a bunch of Janis Ian and John Prine records and pass the revolver around with 1 bullet."

OK, I'll play along ... can't believe this 1 hasn't been named yet. From 1973, Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" album, "Time" ...

Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
Fritter and waste the hours in an off-hand way
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town
Waiting for someone or something to show you the way

Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain
You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun

And you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in a relative way, but you're older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death ...

Time
