One long-standing exoplanet researcher argues that we dont know very much about about alien planet atmospheres, as an example. Princeton Universitys Adam Burrows says that not only is our understanding at an infancy, but the media and scientists overhype information based on very little data.
Burrows skepticism comes from how information on exoplanet atmospheres is collected. That uses a method called low-resolution photometry, which shows changes in light and radiation emitted from an object such as a planet. This could be affected by things such as a planets rotation and cloud cover.

We Hype Global Warming Findings Amid Little Data, Climate Scientist Says
Hmmm.... Seems to be an endemic problem these days....
As Steven Hawking said:
We may not want to contact extra terrestial beings...We may not like the outcome....
Fill in the blanks with "global warming," "climate change," "income inequality," etc.
Let’s see. . . .possible hostile aliens from space (not from south of the border) versus Obama. . .tough call on who present more of a threat.
;-)

Sadly Living being tend to gravitate towards tyranny... It would be a safe bet if we meet another alien race their government would be totalitarian, and that would be bad...
Yet some morons think NASA is hiding life on mars.
You want the funding, you better bring the hype, it seems.
If they exist there are two reasons aliens haven’t visited earth. Either they haven’t discovered us or they simply aren’t interested in us. Of the two I think a lack of interest is preferable. It means they’ve discovered us and decided we weren’t worth bothering with. If they haven’t discovered us we should hope they don’t and if they do we should hope they pass us by.
The problem is that the bad reasons they might contact us are far more numerous than the good reasons they might contact us. The only good reason would be that they’re friendly and want to be friendly with us for some inexplicable reason. If they were here seeking resources it would be a very bad day for us indeed. There would be little point in strip mining the planet, sucking up our atmosphere, or draining the oceans. All the things that make up the earth can be found in vast abundance all across the universe. The biological proteins are the only thing that appears to be rare in the universe.
Aren't you contradicting yourself?
