"The more that old remedies pan out in studies, the more likely physicians are to suggest them," said Dr. Philip Hagen, vice chair of the division of preventive medicine at Mayo Clinic. "Part of the drive is the cost of health caretrying these at home could save you a trip to the doctor." Consider these golden oldies the next time you're feeling under the weather.

“Dont forget peppermint sticks for an upset stomach.”
We were given coke syrup for an upset stomach. Mom would run down to the candy store and bring up a cup filled with it.
Ice cream stick with tape for broken fingers. My father would hold me and my mom would pull. I screamed, dad would apply stick and tape. Then I got ice cream. Doctor in my building saw me one day and asked me why I had a stick taped to my finger. I told him what happened. He went through the roof. Forced my parents to take me across the street to the hospital.
Long story short, tape job worked. Worked so well, that parents were bringing their kids to my dad for medical treatment. He would politely say no and would recommend someone.
He wasn’t a doctor.
Thats what my dad used to do when he had the flu - pour a tumbler of Scotch, swill it down, wrap himself in about 6 blankets, and go to bed for 48 hours. He’d wake up cured.

kerosene on scrapes and cuts, it works had a many a cut treated that way.
Lets don’t forget the hot toddy for bad colds. My Mom used to dose us up at bedtime with one and you went right to sleep. I guess the oz of Wild Turkey was a significant factor. :-)
I haven’t had a cold or flu since the kids moved out.
Cure for hiccups: Stand up. Take a plastic water bottle and put it to your mouth. Wrap your lips around the opening to seal it from leaking out. Then bend over (head between your legs)to the point the water bottle upside down. Start drinking. It works every time for me.

My Father was an old time family physician who started his practice before antibiotics and other wonder drugs. He often prescribed many of these old time remedies even after more “modern” treatments were available. His old time remedy for nausea was Coca Cola syrup...most pharmacies in those days still had soda fountains and had the syrup available.
Proves you are of ‘a certain age’ .
