Bode Miller had just tied for a bronze medal in the mens super-G at the Olympics in Sochi, Russia, on Sunday and it was time to be interviewed. NBC had already established Millers quest as an emotional story line, putting a microphone on his wife, Morgan, to hear her reactions to his races, and having the couple sit for an interview with Tom Brokaw. He was being humanized as the changed man, the family man, the mature 36-year-old whose brother had died last year.

(after a few decades of not watching the Olympics, with the weather around here I've been watching it as a diversion)
It was uncomfortable, for sure. But this is after a week of so many of those elite atheletes blaming the snow, uniforms, the ice, the weather, just about anything but themselve. It's bizarre and self-centered. Fact is, they lost a lot of races to atheletes who adapted better than they did, and they should be more gracious. For Bode Miller, it seemed to be all about him and his quest to godliness.
I thought that NBC has been trying to humanize these atheletes. That honest display of emotion was the first time I could stand Bode Miller.
JMHO
Hard to believe that someone, anyone at the NYT has a conscience.
I saw that “interview” ..... just terrible. It was an emotional moment for him and she kept pulling every string she could, trying to get him to unravel when she saw him starting to tear up. Then the camera followed and focused on him while he tried to pull himself together. Yet another reason to dislike the enemedia jackals. I’ve watched very little of the Olympics ... just happened to be flipping through the channels. What a sorry bunch NBC has - Bob ‘Pinkeye’ Costas, Matt Liar, and since it’s all to much for Matt to handle, now Meredith Vieira is helping out. Ugh.
As Rush famously said, “ The MSM is the only business that believes the customer is always wrong.”
It absolutely was...I wanted to smack that beotch of a reporter for goading him.
“What are you feeling. You are upset whats going on inside whats going on inside whats happening inside....”
Jeez, stfu!
How dare she!
What? You don’t like Johnny qWeir?
That was women's skeleton, athlete was Katie Uhlaender. She really wanted the win and came in 4th by a tiny margin. She handled the interview well, was tough, stoic, very admirable. And they pushed and they pushed and they pushed and they didn't stop until she broke down and cried.
I bet they had a round of high-fives in the control room.
THis is what the press do daily folks, nothing new here except that during the olympics they tend to target younger folks with little media savvy as their targets to manipulate for ratings..
I hate the olympics, because in the US broadcast media its not simply a competition, they want to humanize every person and invent some drama or whatnot to try to get a vested interest from the watcher to boost their ratings and doesn’t matter how idiotic they have to be to do it.
Olympics aren’t the only time they do it of course, but its the most flagrantly obvious.
Bob “Pinkeye” Costas.
Hilarious, Quviut. When I first saw it, I thought, “Bob, get a room” and don’t make me look at that disgusting eye.
Then it got worse over the course of the week and articles popped up about “the eye”, trying to elicit sympathy for the dope. ..claiming that the Olympic reporting is tainted without the liberal behind the mic.
I watch the figure skating and then only the last and best skaters. Listening to Scott Hamilton is fine.
FMCDH(BITS)
I saw this. I wanted to smack the reporter.
MSM types are devoid of decency and humanity.
Likely the worst thing they’ve done since they zoomed in tight on Nancy Reagan as she was breaking down in her last few moments standing over her husband’s casket.
...or something?!
I see Bode Miller as a ‘complex’ guy....and I’m sure the minute I became a ‘fan’ of Bode, he would disappoint me in some way. I don’t dislike him...just very reluctant to ‘like’ him.
I understand the desire to humanize the athletes, but this reporter just kept pressing and pressing. I found it weird.
This “interview” was taped hours earlier. NBC had plenty of time to edit out this abominable intrusion but they chose to keep it in because, I’m sure, they imagined it was “compelling”.
Anything to get ratings up.
She made viewers uncomfortable, as well as spoiling a moment for Bode which, except for her, was a very special time for him.
She should lose her job!
I’ve seen very little - the Biathlon was good when a 40 year old skated off a penalty and beat all the youngsters. The cross country relays have been excellent - women’s was fantastic. I just cannot watch ice skating other than ice dancing and then I’m mostly looking for Davis/White. Curling .... like watching paint dry. If the weather weren’t so bad in so many places with people not having much to do, I doubt their viewership would be at reasonable levels. Instead, I’ve been watching the Outdoor channel (deer hunting, African safari) for the most part & a lot of it is reruns.
Last comment - many of the ‘uniforms’ have been awful - whoever thought the snowboarders, etc. should be in “khaki” that looked like grandma sewed patches on it should have been fired - you know somebody for the US Olympic team had to approve it. Speed skaters have weird patches in the insides of their thighs ... should have been the same color as the suits ... when they stand with their legs close together, it looks like they have big silver balls. ... the way they’ve been skating, they could have used some real ones. I need to stop now .... before I say something ‘really’ bad.
This tweet, from my local news guy, sums it up pretty well:
@TheTeditorial Saw the Christen Cooper interview with Bode Miller. Suddenly Bob Costas’ eye isn’t the most disgusting thing on NBC. #stayclassySochi
That NBC cow reporter makes The Stepford Wives look human. She knew just what she was doing. While interviewing Miller she smelled blood in the water and circled for the kill.
