I see you’re from SoCal - got sober in Santa Monica.
41 years for me last November 20. Pure grace. That’s a lot of really good days, one at a time....
“...and God, please help me and Obama NOT to change what I can unless it is FOR THE BETTER...”
It’a a great prayer I say every day at least once a day or more.
I am an elected official and I choose to tell my story. People need to know, that you can reach your dreams ... At any age.
Thanks for posting the full prayer.
As I read, the part that is referred to as the “Serenity Prayer” has been around prior, but then Niebuhr used the idea and turned it into this slightly different and longer prayer.
But it’s a beautiful reminder for everyone, regardless the problems they may be facing.
Feb. 5th was 20 years clean and sober.
That prayer may have saved my life.
“That prayer may have saved my life.’
It’s a wonderful reminder to keep things in perspective and it applies to everyone in every situation in life.
This prayer helped me learn to think in ways I didn’t know were possible.
Since June 29, 1982 :)
I remember when old timers were mysteries. After 25 years 5 months and 3 weeks or so, I discovered that the trick really is to not drink or die...
Here's to the continuance of "giving it away" in a "give it up" world...
I saw a variation of this prayer this morning:
Lord, give me coffee to change the things I can change, and wine to accept the things I can’t.
“Lord, give me coffee to change the things I can change, and wine to accept the things I cant.”
LOL!
That works too.
After the first twenty years you know what comes next? Twenty-four years and one day. That’s all any of us get, a daily reprieve. I used to ask the old timers “How does this program work?’’ “Just fine’’ they used to tell me. “Keep coming’’. It all boils down to three things my sponsor told me: Trust God, clean house, help others.
And we are here and we are praying .I hold you all close. If you have a ping list put me on it.I am here-Real Time.(((((Hugs)))))
Congratulations to you as well. God does exist, I’ve felt his presence the night I had my spiritual awaking . After a black out of some three days I came to alone in my room sick, tired and fearful of everything, thinking I was going to die. I don’t say this glibly but in the darkness something told me ‘’It’s time’’. It wasn’t an audible voice I heard but more inside me that I heard it. It wasn’t a judgmental voice but rather one of an whelming hope and love. I don’t know how else to put it. And I responded out loud by repeating it back “It’s time’’. So I got off my butt and went to a meeting and never looked back.
Its a beautiful prayer and I have a copy of it in front of me from a booklet given to me by a recent visitor to the Papal Basilica of St. Francis.
I noticed most of the replies seem to be relating to chemical addiction. It is great to see the length of sobriety and the incredible changes God has made in people’s lives on this site. I too have been sober from alcohol for over 6 years now and am grateful every day.
Although this may get me flamed, I sincerely believe there is an even greater threat than chemical addiction that is spreading across the world. Sexual addiction in whatever form - adultery, pornography, same sex attraction, etc...
We have two different groups of men going through a recovery step study at our church, of which I lead half. Out of the 40 plus men, at least 30 are battling sex addiction. I see hundreds of men a year come through our doors looking for help from addictions. Most are adultery and pornography addicts that have ruined their marriages and families. Unfortunately, most quit after a month or so.
It saddens me to see many on this conservative forum so passionately defend porn. Some may not consider it a problem and that it is a “private” matter. More and more studies are showing that porn addiction creates the same chemical reactions and dependencies that chemical addiction does. It is a problem that is becomes more destructive everyday.
Flame away.
If the whole world lived by that prayer think what a world it would be.
