Wives Are Now More Educated than Husbands In the U.S: More women are "marrying down,", academically
TIME ^ | 02/14/2014 | Belinda Luscombe

or the first time in 50 years, the educational balance among married couples has tipped towards women. Wives are more likely to be the better educated partner than the other way around. The trend is particularly sharp among newlyweds; in 2012 almost 40% of college educated women were married to a guy without a degree.

This is a big reversal from the 30 year trend between 1960 and 1990, when it was the men who were marrying down, educationally speaking. The difference is not yet huge; Pew researchers, using data from the American Community Survey and the Decennial Census, found that in 2012, 21% of wives had advanced further academically than their spouses, while 20% of husbands were the more educated ones. But it appears to be growing; counting just newlyweds (those married in the 12 months before the survey), more than a quarter of the women had chosen a partner with less education, while 15% of men did the same.

The trend is not necessarily due to the fact that women are smarter than men. More women than men have been graduating from college at all levels—bachelors, masters and doctoral—for several years, so it was simply a matter of time until the marriage pool reflected that.

Because every man who has a degree is socially inept, wimpy, wears glasses, and has no useful skills?

Hey, so a few chicks with PhDs in home economics are “marrying down” to a guy with a bachelor degree in engineering?

Such women are still marrying up financially. Rush Limbaugh went into the details of this story.

It’s partially feminism and partly self preservation. Women want to protect themselves if the marriage doesn’t workout. Education is a way to protect themselves.

Agree. I got so frustrated with a junior lender that I remarked he wrote and spoke as though English was his second language and he did not have a first

Sorry! Typing on my phone and didn’t see that I’d omitted a fairly important number.

No, we like "2 gauge" - that's HOT! ; )

Most of the degrees that women are receiving are in
ridiculous make believe fields like “women’s studies”
etc. This in NO WAY indicates they are better educated.
It just means they wasted massive amounts of money on
baseless and useless indoctrination.

You are so right. Used to be, a woman found a man, got married and they stayed together for the rest of their lives. With the divorce rate at 50% or so, it makes good sense to be educated and have some skills to make it on your own.

My brother got an Associate degree in Automotive Technology way back in the 70’s—In other words, he’s a mechanic—And he’s never had a problem finding a job.

His wife, on the other hand, with her Bachelor degree in Sociology, has never really worked a day in her discipline—Unless you count face-to-face encounters in a retail setting.

Which one do you think pulls in more money?

At least I can fairly claim that my daughter and I can handle a twelve! (Spelled out this time so I don’t omit any numbers.)

There’s a story in our family that my late mother-in-law, age 9, saw a chicken hawk, grabbed her uncle’s 10-gauge, and tried heroically to shoot—with the result that she recoiled herself into the manure pile and blew the roof off the outhouse with her uncle inside it. This would have been about 1920. True? I don’t know, but knowing my brave beautiful MIL I wouldn’t be surprised at all.

I mostly recruit salespeople. Do you think a degree is the first thing I look at?

No, but a lot depends on the circumstances.

I have to make one point: we should be careful not to judge young people based on their degrees. There are a lot of kids who started college in 2006, 2007, 2008. They studied the fields that had resulted in a job before the great crash of 2008-9. No one knew back then that a business degree would be next to worthless. The question is, what did they do with their lives after they found that the degree was worthless?

I know a young man who sacrificed and struggled and labored to get a degree in history which is the field he loves dearly. Before 2008 he had some job prospects; afterward, nothing. But he did not sit around in his mother's basement feeling sorry for himself. He got a different job and has actually a better opportunity now to teach people about our national heritage. He's the child of a poor single mother with no education and has been educating himself since he was 12, and I know he's going to be a big success because of his attitude despite his degree area. Still, college did him a world of good--I can't emphasize that enough.

With her law degree, is Abortion Barbie more educated than her sugar daddy ex-husband who paid her way (and was 14 years her senior)?

I don’t know if she ever remarried, but she was seeing another fellow while that husband was paying the bills.

Yet she claims she didn’t abandon her family. Yeah right.

She might be. However, did she ever pass the bar?
Does she have actual work experience or is she like Sheila Jackson Lee? But you bring up a bigger point is that Abortion Barbie is a snake and a weasel and can’t be trusted with any kind of power.
