A woman has been arrested after a toddler she was caring for was found inside a filthy storage unit with no water and little food.
Collier County Sheriff's deputies arrested the 44-year-old woman on Wednesday. She faces a felony child neglect charge.
My daughter and her husband applied for “assistance”. They just had a baby, he was very unexpectedly laid off for a while, now an electrician’s apprentice, doesn’t make a ton but he’s working. They’re behind on bills, living with us and trying to get ahead, but it’s hard to catch up these days. We can’t help other than offer them a place to live.
They were offered a whopping $15 a month, even though they put “other” on the application (both are white/native American). I figure the “person in charge” took one look at our address (in a predominately white, middle-class Philly suburb) and that was that.
I remember a story about how because commercial real estate was going for such a premium, that some small business owners would have their call centers set up in storage units.
Phone lines, etc. were run in, and they were climate controlled.
At the time, the story was: "How terrible that a business can't afford to rent office space. Here's to American ingenuity."
Now the story is, "What a lucky woman. Getting to tuck her kid in at night. Thank goodness for high unemployment!"
I'm living in bizzaro world.
I was a “victim” of Hurricane Katrina and still couldn’t get food stamps. They as much as told me that middle-aged white men pay for benefits, they don’t receive them.
Yep. That was what I discovered.
I’m asking around now because I’m balanced on a knife-edge. I got laid off from both of my part-time jobs, both layoffs indirectly due to Obamacare. I am either going to be able to sell my house fast and be fairly comfortable, or I am going to get foreclosed on and be homeless. Trying to make plans. Thank goodness I no longer have young children to worry about.
Good on ya!!!
A tent city has recently developed in the woods near me in Memphis. I’m not sure how many people are living there, but I know there are men and women and dogs. I hope there are no children. Last week I saw two men hauling a load of pallets back there in a shopping cart, likely for firewood. They don’t look like drunks and drug users. They look to be formerly middle class who have gone bust and now have no idea where to turn.
I’m also noticing more people who appear to be living in their cars.
I hate what has become of our nation. I despise these politicians wedded to wicked ideologies that do nothing but destroy and impoverish.
I hear you. The woman has issues.
I am sorry to read of your troubles. I know of many in your situation, trying to sell homes before they are foreclosed and living on the edge, through no fault of their own. (not people who got “forced” loans which they knew they could not pay back)
We are blessed, in knowing if worse comes to worse, we have extended family (3 generations) close by and we can all commune in the largest home if need be. Not ideal, but not our car.
It gets cold
That doesn’t surprise me. They give out disability like candy for “bipolar” and my brother has real issues with it and can’t hardly get a hearing in the past year.
Puzzling, though. It does not say how she is related to the child she was “caring for”. Strange reporting. Poor little one.
I agree. Hopefully the child gets to go somewhere with predictable sanitation.
too white for welfare?
Sorry to hear that, and hope conditions reverse.
$15? Is that to insult them, without really providing help?
There are lots of people who’ve never heard the saying about “meeting a man with no feet”. It’s tough out there. Especially for those over 50. I feel blessed that my wife and I have enough to live comfortably. I hope your kids can get out of the hole.
I just said a prayer for you, friend.
That seems to be their problem. I can’t imagine what it is like for a white person to get assistance in Memphis.
