A woman has been arrested after a toddler she was caring for was found inside a filthy storage unit with no water and little food.
Collier County Sheriff's deputies arrested the 44-year-old woman on Wednesday. She faces a felony child neglect charge.
The woman was living there, too, not just the toddler. I’d feel more sympathy for her if it weren’t for the two bottles of vodka.
There has got to be a story here. More likely the woman needs therapy or mental health counseling than jail.
In this day and age with section 8, food stamps and 70+ other programs how could anyone live that way?

I’ve often wondered if it would be possible to live by renting a storage unit. I don’t know how you would manage the sneaking in and out, and avoiding having a light show. You’d have to haul water in and out somehow. But at least it wouldn’t be freezing—you wouldn’t die of cold.
You would be surprised at how difficult it can be for a formerly middle-class person to get state assistance of any kind.
Um , toileting? Or were you including depends in your lifestyle??
I’ve heard of men who did live in them. Just having stored stuff in there, I’d have a hard time with the heat and air.
If you are white, often you won’t qualify. Seriously. I had a DES employee tell me that to my face.
I watch the tv show Hoarders....its unbelieveable what filth some people live in. They don’t even care, it is just a collection to them. Serious mental disorder.
I lived in my car for a little while, in New York, and very nearly got a storage unit so I could park there in the evenings for safety.
Lots of people go through poor times. I was living on a few hundred dollars per month.
Now I have cars in storage...
Fortunes change as long as there is a whiff of freedom to be found.
My wife told of meeting a gal at the homeless tent city. For awhile she tried to survive on the streets with her kids. It was a good night if she could find an empty porta-john that was extra large so she and her kids could spend the night inside a locked area.
She finally gave the kids up to foster homes (temporarily?) so she could live in the tent city (kids aren’t allowed).

We are thinking of something different. I meant the kind of warehouse building where you rent a space to store the junk you can’t gt into your apartment or house. These buildings are heated and air-conditioned to some extent. I was in one, and the air was cool but not cold. There was an electrical outlet and a light in each rental unit. The limiting factor is that you have to check in and out past a security guard, who is going to notice if you go in every evening and don’t check out. There are high cyclone fences around these places.
Wondering the same thing. I'm usually pretty unsympathetic to boozers, but this is one of those moments when the quiet, but persistent nagging voice of Jesus won't let me brush it off as just another story about human refuse.

Yes, it’s do-able. Pay for a climate-controlled unit with 24-hour access. Go out and about during the day (mall). Return to the unit after-hours. Wash in the bathroom sink. Run an extension cord for your TV and X-Box. Sleep, then get out before the office opens in the morning. Happens regularly at my company. As long as the unit gets paid for and the “tenant” doesn’t “reside” there during business hours, can’t do much about it unless you stay after hours to catch them.
I’ve known some hoarders. #2 son was just telling us about the mother of one of his friends. We suggested he move out, and he said, “I could go over to Vinnie’s house, excavate a den in the Stuff, and they’d never know I was there.” (Until they noticed their food disappearing, of course.)
