Staff at a Danish zoo where a healthy giraffe was put down have received death threats as debate rages online over the killing, which took place despite a petition signed by thousands of animal lovers.
Several staff members were targeted after the animal, named Marius, was shot Sunday, Copenhagen Zoo spokesman Tobias Stenbæk Bro told CNN on Monday.
The Copenhagen Zoo said it "euthanized" Marius to avoid inbreeding. A veterinarian shot Marius with a rifle as he leaned down to munch on rye bread, a favorite snack. After an autopsy the giraffe was dismembered in front of an audience that included children and fed to the zoo's lions, tigers and leopards.

Well now...does a lion reason? ;^)
We humans are “supposed” to be capable of more reasoned thought...
What about the animals the lions normally eat?
They are probably killed humanely, perhaps by shooting them in the head. Cut up and then served to the lions.
The only difference here is its a giraff and was done in public.
That would require a functioning intellect.
Outstanding movie.
Actually it is not and never was a non-story. Rare animals are a source of revenue. Its a fraud and waste story.
IF they were worried about inbreeding all they had to do was neuter it. They could have sold it for $200,000. Someone made them the offer.
And seriously...who would take a child down to the killing floor to get the full slaughterhouse experience?
“The situation with the unfortunate giraffe has some implications for Obamacare. “
As a matter of fact, that was my first thought when I read the article — “useless eaters” are not needed in the society.
Great way to justify that bacon cheeseburger you ate for lunch. Hey, as long as you feel better.
Have you ever had to put a pet to sleep? This is basically the same thing. No one tortured this giraffe. This was not done for amusement or sadistic kicks. The giraffe had no concept of "betrayal of trust" that you seem determined to assign him. He was a happy bloke eating some leaves, and then... he was gone. People should all be so lucky, much less animals.
I really, truly hope you're out walking the sidewalks in front of abortion clinics. Seriously. You need to rethink your priorities.
“Oh so what do lions do in the wild? “
They run down their prey in wide open spaces, that’s what they do.
They work hard for their food.
.
Please don’t get me wrong...I understand the “laws of nature” and I don’t buck it...I know that when I go in the ocean or forest, I’ve just become part of the food chain. I may not like it, but those are the risks I’ve assumed.
I’ve also hunted and fished for my food on occasion so I’m not squeamish about preparing my food vs. the risks associated with cellophane wrapped meat.
I just think there were other options that could have been exercised that would have most definitely prevented the hue and outcry.
Neuter it so it doesn’t breed if it’s genes are polluted...
Take the $$ raised by the folks and use it more productively. I figure you could buy a lot of “feeder” critters for the predators at the zoo for the amount of $$ offered for one “useless” giraffe.
Or, put it down in private with a paid audience who might benefit from such a demonstration...
Just some of my thoughts on the matter...not that they’re worth much.
The zoo admits they dispose of 20-30 animals a year nobody’s ever complained about the antelopes, wild boar and others. What makes this so different?
"Some animals are more equal than others."
For me personally? None...
For those who are obviously emotional over the issue...it’s a cuddly, fuzzy and cute giraffe.
Not knowing if the zoo relies on paid admissions and private donors, but if they do, this is not the kind of publicity I would be seeking...
If lions were not supposed to eat giraffes, they wouldn’t taste like meat.
Horses' future uncertain if NYC carriage rides end (DeBlasio may turn them into burgers)
I see what you did there...;^)
So what does that have to do with your pathetic attempt to insult?
Bacon cheeseburger? That’s very funny. I keep kosher AND I do not eat any red meat at all. Haven’t for years.

$680K offer from another zoo? First, this zoo is managed by idiots. That money could have really helped the other animals in the zoo more than the several hundred pounds of meat that the giraffe provided. I’m all for feeding lions good meat but when offered a gain of almost 3/4 of a million dollars this makes no sense. Then again, the Danes are in a socialistic society and good common fiscal decisions aren’t primary for government workers. Second, the meat could have been processed for human consumption at a high price if it was destined to be killed. People would pay quite a bit for giraffe steaks if the money were to go to a charity or positive worthwhile effort. Third, the necropsy was for processing of the meat into parts that would not adversely affect the lions. I wonder if they wasted the hide too?
