Tiger Mom Amy Chua: Three factors why Indians, Jews, Chinese do better than others
The Globe And Mail ^ | Feb 5, 2014 | Craig Offman

Posted on 02/09/2014 12:04:23 PM PST by James C. Bennett

Sounding a little wounded from the wrath that greeted her 2011 parenting memoir Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother, Amy Chua has nonetheless jumped back into the pop-ethnography circus with a new book and fresh controversy.

Written with her husband, fellow Yale Law School professor Jed Rubenfeld, The Triple Package: How Three Unlikely Traits Explain the Rise and Fall of Cultural Groups in America posits another theory about collective identity, one that toe-tests – or perhaps leaps over – the line of political correctness: Some U.S. cultural groups, the couple say, are bound to be more successful than others.

...

The book isn’t a collection of flame-tossing whimsy: The research staff acknowledged at the back of the book is the size of a small minority unto itself. Nearly half of its 300 pages consist of footnotes and endnotes to support its contentious arguments: The sense of entitlement that comes from a superiority complex is a leading cause of WASP decline, while Appalachians have the opposite problem – a sense of inferiority makes them feel as though they are not deserving of the same success as other cultures. The authors note their concern about the weakening of impulse control among Jewish-Americans and point out that Mormons are an ideal Triple Package. Uncomfortable yet?

Why did you find it important to write this book now?

Chua: I’ve actually been interested in this topic of disproportionately successful minorities for most of my career. I wrote the book World on Fire in 2002, that was about minorities in the world, and Jed and I, we have these cultural differences. He’s Jewish and I’m Chinese-American, and we’ve noticed big differences and similarities. I used to say, “Chinese people are just two generations behind the Jews.”

The Tiger Mom has nothing on the Jewish mother.

And all vote Democrat and come from non-western cultures. In the case of Askenazic Jews, success is both genetic and cultural. In the case of Indians and Chinese, it is due to the fact that the immigrants that come to our Western society tend to be on the right side of the bell curve in terms of intelligence, relative to their native societies as a whole.

What worries me is that if you look at the median IQ of Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, etc. and then consider that most immigrants from these countries are to the left of the bell curve in terms of IQ distribution, we are in a lot of trouble.

Am I wrong to believe that we should instead give preference to civilizationaly-compatible immigrants from Europe, instead of Asians, Latin Americans, and Middle Easterners? Does any politician have the stones to say this?

I’m impressed how well her kids turned out, considering that she’s a lawyer and much handicapped from a lack of moral sense.

So you want to kiss the backsides non-westerners, such as those who wrote this book?

Not only that but in her first book she describes the child rearing she learned from her mother. At minimum they are brutal and in instances out right abusive. the fact that her parents pushed her harder and harder to be what they wanted is not a clarion call to follow. I note with interest that she comes to the US to tell us about the ‘values’ of the Chinese. How quaint

You can thank Ted Kennedy (Burn in Hell) for that.

What will the well-adjusted, high-self-esteem children, of today’s progressive and permissive parents, call the brutalized, repressed children of Tiger Moms?

Boss.

The common factor of Asian societies is that they don't have US-type welfare systems. In a society where slackers can easily and literally starve to death, parents try hard to ensure that their kids do well.

One thing she leaves out is that minorities aren’t required to be politically correct. Whatever they do, whatever they say is ok with the ‘powers that be’ because they aren’t part of the ‘oppressors’. How nice for them! I wonder if she factors in that particular freedom?

This writer thinks that its the imported foreign culture that enables certain minorities to succeed in the US and gives no credit, it seems, to the environment created by those who came before her.

Its this kind of killing the goose that laid the golden egg thinking that will eventually bring it down for all of us.

Nice to think that you support the conquest of the west by the hordes of East Asia. We had laws banning Asian immigration for 70 years for a good reason.

Its fashionable to condemn American prohibitions of the 19th and early 20th century on asian immigration without considering the fact that distributing its population abroad was official policy in Japan and China during that time.

Exactly like Mexico's today.

“Nice to think that you support the conquest of the west by the hordes of East Asia.”

That’s not what USFRIENDINVICTORIA is doing. I think the comment is about how American kids often are lazy, self-indulgent wusses. And USFRIENDINVICTORIA is 100% correct on that score.

Where did you get that idea from what I wrote? For that matter, where did you get that idea from the article. Did you even read the article?

I was referring to the grit, determination and hard work that the Tiger Mom advocates for children. Not that long ago, those were the values citizens of N. European, and N. American nations held.

If you think that we (Caucasian, N. European origins) are entitled to the good life; then you only have to look in the mirror to see who to blame for the "conquest of the west". You should be thanking the Tiger Mom for the warning. Apparently, she's also "politically incorrect" to certain "conservatives".

We are no more entitled to the good life than they are entitled to exist in western society. Agree with you on this point.
