No matter how many times I watch it, I never get tired of it. I have Lonesome Dove and the prequels and sequels and haul them out off and on. Lonesome Dove is my very favorite. All of Larry McMurtry’s books are wonderful, too. If you haven’t read them, you should.
Greatest western ever made.
I watch every one of Duval’s westerns when and where I can. Lonesome Dove, Open Range, etc. are all great movies.
We need more of them.
Agreed. The book is sitting on my mantle; the DVD in my TV stand.
One travesty is the mini-series didn't even win best best mini-series in 1989.
The casting of Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones as Augustus McCray and Woodrow F. McCall, respectively, was inspired genius.
Lonesome Dove was originally a 1972 screenplay that would have starred James Stewart as Augustus McCrae, John Wayne as W.F. Call, and Henry Fonda as Jake Spoon. When the movie was never made, Larry McMurtry turned the story into a Pulitzer Prize-winning novel.
I never thought a TV mini series would turn out to the greatest western I have ever saw, but it was. Better than Red River, better than The Searchers. None can compare. From the characters to the soundtrack it was the best. Robert Duvall has said out of all the characters he has ever played Augustus McCrae was his favorite.
“They say you’re a man of vision”.

Before the Lonesome Dove mini series I'd always considered The Searchers to be the greatest western, although I know many disagree.
I've never seen Robert Duvall play a better role than Gus McCrae.
If I had any issue with the mini series, it was the casting of Robert Urich as Jake Spoon. In my opinion, Urich was miscast and did bring to life Jake Spoon from the novel.
Agree with Robert Urich being miscast. But his hanging was classic and showed exactly the creed of the Old West. “You ride with outlaws you die with outlaws”. No one wanted to hang him, especially Augustus, but it had to be done.
Thanks. I just have the opening theme in iTunes. Think I’ll grab an MP3 of that link!
Diane Lane was also perfect for the role.

Here sre some pictures of the Set from a blog...
its been not taken care of
I was there about 15 years ago and it wasn’t this bad... If Mr Kincaid had asked so many people love this movie they may have helped preserve the set... Oh well like the house in Giant its gone now.
Have not read his books. Thanks for the tip. Looking for a new author to get to know. Seems a good day to start. :-)
