Since FReepers know everything...
Amongst my late father's effects we found a safe deposit box key. Little blue envelope, a box number hand written on the flap, nothing to identify which bank or branch.
Is there some way short of going to each of the thousands of banks in a hundred mile radius to determine where the box might be?
If you can’t find any old bank records which might give a clue, I’d take a chance and visit a branch of four or five of the biggest in the region - even if you don’t hit the exact branch, you might hit one in the chain which should recognize a key from their own operation - and the bigger banks may have ways of identifying to which chain the key belongs even if it isn’t theirs....
That being the case, go to your State's website and find the 'unclaimed property' section (I think every State has one).
As my parents aged and were slipping into dementia, wifey and I were fortunate enough to received their permission to begin handling their affairs and finances.
It sure made it easier on us after their deaths.
try the bank closest to his last residence.
work your way out from there.
