If you can’t find any old bank records which might give a clue, I’d take a chance and visit a branch of four or five of the biggest in the region - even if you don’t hit the exact branch, you might hit one in the chain which should recognize a key from their own operation - and the bigger banks may have ways of identifying to which chain the key belongs even if it isn’t theirs....
That being the case, go to your State's website and find the 'unclaimed property' section (I think every State has one).
As my parents aged and were slipping into dementia, wifey and I were fortunate enough to received their permission to begin handling their affairs and finances.
It sure made it easier on us after their deaths.
