Charcoal does a couple of things. It provides a slow breakdown source of carbon, it has nooks and crannies for beneficial micro-organisms to hide, and it adds organic bulk to the soil.

DRATS - CUCUMBER SEEDS ON THE FLOOR

Okay, I punched holes in four cups and put seed starter in. Used a knife and put some tobacco seed in the four cups. How many seeds? Who knows, maybe thousands as opposed to millions. They are now in a plastic tray with filtered water in the tray and under the grow lamp. Remember, the time I tried this last year I was using a commercial tray with grow medium in it and not one seed sprouted. I murdered those tobacco seeds. Will never use a commercial piece of crap to start seeds again.

Now, after the tobacco, filled two cups with starter and opened the envelope of Carolina Cucumber seed. Inside was a very small little plastic bag with the seed. I picked up the bag by its top and they had not sealed the bottom of the bag and almost every seed hit the floor. There were about 100 seeds in that bag.

Grabbed the Yorkie because I knew she would eat them and she was headed to them, so shut her in the bathroom, got a broom and scooper and got the seeds in there. Put the seeds in the envelope itself as the open bottom plastic bag was useless.

Let the dog out again, planted the cucumber seeds and also had to make tags to put in cups so I would know what’s in them.

After I finished, found three more cucumber seeds, these in the middle of the floor - got those and put in envelope. I was not happy to deal with seeds on the floor.

If the tobacco comes up, which it should this time, there will be multiple upon multiple plants. Once they are up enough, I can take some of those out and put them in cups - right?

Thank you, when you break down the chunks, is it almost a powder? I have quite a bit of mesquite charcoal, after a BBQ and a lot of mesquite ash, how does that figure in adding to the soil?
