NEW YORK Pete Seeger, the banjo-picking troubadour who sang for migrant workers, college students and star-struck presidents in a career that introduced generations of Americans to their folk music heritage, died Monday at the age of 94.

You are correct. Mary passed in 2009, but Pete Yarrow and Paul Stookey are still alive. Unless Mr. Seeger hacked them off, you can almost bet they'll be at the funeral. Fact is...it'll probably be a who's-who of American folk music
As for me....I love the music (overlooking some of the lyrics), but I really do not care about the late Mr. Seeger.
HE LIVED ON LONG ISLAND, I THINK HUNTINGTON. I USED TO SEE HIM DRIVING IN ON THE EXPRESSWAY IN HIS VOLKSWAGEN
Yes.
They were very good musicians, and their harmonies raised the level of the songs they sang.
It made their message much more palatable then if they wore dirty worker-boots, Mao jackets, and Lenin Caps with red Stars on them.
This made them MORE insidious than if they had presented communism in all its ugliness.
(Back to Seeger stealing songs and copyrighting them for himself: many of the songs he stole were written by Black Folks. POOR Black Folks. POOR Black Folks who were in PRISON. Or Dead Folks. Or Illiterate Folks. Disenfranchised Folks. Folks who couldn’t fight back, and Folks for whom he claimed to speak and for whose “causes” he claimed to champion!)
Yep.
“An NYC waitress told me he was famous for NEVER tipping.”
This was because Seeger was following the example of Leon Trotsky, who never tipped, in the belief that he was inciting revolutionary consciousness in the wait staff.
Anyway, “America’s best loved commie” has finally croaked. Let him now assume his place as First Peoples’ Commissar of Soviet Hell (from the Kingston Trio song).
Long before I knew who he was, Sesame Street tried to shove him down my throat at least a couple of times a week. Someone should have been up on charges.
You can bet Bruce Springsteen will be there.
Amazing how all these obits are totally dodging the fact that he was one of the most prominent Communists in American history.
“He participated in Occupy Wall Street” was the closest they have come.
Of course Commies will say that Stalin wasn’t a “real Communist”.
Stalin was the perfect Communist...he applied Marx and Lenin’s theories “To a T.”
One more oxygen thief who used more than his share and who worked against everything that made him personally rich and comfortable. Good riddance.
Drive an elm stake through his heart. It’s got to be easier to find than his brain. Hope he roasts in hell, the worthless ass maggot.
And to this day the commies in our midst are still arguing that “true socialism hasn’t been tried yet!!”
So Seeger finally croaked. Not to be missed by freedom lovers.
Rot in Hell Pete, you and Woody.
Commie filth
I recall an amusing old Limelighters ditty about a Communist who dies, is upset that he can’t do any effective organizing in Heaven, so he drifts down and becomes First People’s Commissar of Soviet Hell.
Did Seeger ever record this song?
Pete Seeger - finally a good Communist.
He’s now a good commie.
I thought it was the Kingston Trio! Anyway, the last line went,
“If you want to be a Bolshevik, you’ll have to go to hell!”
Comrade Seeger wouldn’t have touched that with a ten foot hammer & sickle.
Harry Pollitt was a worker, one of Lenin's lads
He was foully murdered by those counter-revolutionary cads...
He was a musician and surrounded himself with “fellow travelers.” Reality never touched him in that echo chamber.
***I pointed out that in Canada he didnt have the right to sing the song,***
Did he pay dues to BMI and ASCAP?
