Keeping the peace is no easy task at Eugenes Nobel Peace Park.
The 24 plaques at the park that feature the American Nobel laureates have attracted attention from visitors and vandals alike since it opened in Alton Baker Park last spring, and the plaque representing the nations most recent laureate, President Obama, has been a prime target.
It got vandalized, Id say, five, six, seven times, said Roger Durant, the projects development director, of the Obama plaque. Nearly every two or three weeks, there was a new mark that we had to try to take off and rub out, he added.
Many of these markings including a racial slur were easily cleaned off, said Durant, but last month he and his team were forced to remove Obamas plaque after finding it carved with profanity.
Its kind of a slap in the face of the organization, Durant said. Its taking donors money out of what its meant to be used for.
After a meeting with Mayor Kitty Piercy Thursday afternoon, Durant said the replacement plaque will be housed in a prominent and secure place likely in the Eugene Public Library at least until the end of Obamas presidency.
Its not the way I would prefer it said Piercy, who called the vandalism intolerable.
I feel sad that we have to do this, but I think lots of times when things dont go the way that you wish they were going, you can use them as a learning opportunity, she added. If we can learn something as a community from what is going on with that and still educate people and share, then I guess thats a good thing.
The park, a more than $225,000 project funded by donations, is the first monument in the country to honor winners of the peace prize. Each plaque and stand cost $5,000, and Durant said the high-pressure laminate plaques where vandals have carved words and other markings costs $800 to replace.
The Obama photograph at the VA hospitals are normally covered in spit and other secretions.
Our turkey in chief shouldn’t even have one.
Wait til the 3 branches of the Baraq Hussein Obama Presidential Library and Choom Gang Museum open up, LOL.
Awarding Baraq Obama the Nobel Prize is a slap in the face of all of humanity.
Eugene OR? I thought Marx, Lenin and Obama were gods there.
I can’t imagine why anyone would disrespect a plaque honoring a man who did absolutely to earn the honor.
absolutely NOTHING, that is.
Seriously?
The beatings will continue until morale improves.

Woo hoo!! And the first 28% is in!! Thank you all very much!! |
What? Just scratches? I would expect it to look like a Stop sign on a country road.
They are, especially on the UO campus. But there are plenty of regular conservative folks in the city and surrounding countryside who haven't been indoctrinated by Communist professors. Some among them might even be tempted to deface an undeserved and totally political plaque.
Cue Gomer Pyle.
Obama won’t feel insulted until somebody smacks a photograph or statue of him, with the bottom of a shoe.

Oregon. Some jackasses paid money for a bronze plaque commemorating (most recently) Zero the Peace Hero, who was handed a so-called Nobel Peace Prize before he’d done anything (like Gore before him), and of course before he started carrying out murders via proxies in the jihadist groups and Mexican drug gangs. Thanks bkopto.
I’d expect it to look like an open-air outhouse....
I’ve been told they have to clean it on a regular basis, unlike the photograph of the VA Secretary next to it.
No, you were right the first time. He did absolutely to earn it. He did even less than NOTHING.
